The Thomas J. Landers Fund for Hearing Impaired Children Professor Tom Landers was a long-time supporter of the SladeChild Foundation, and very interested in the projects supported in different countries. Tom was a dedicated educator with Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. who felt strongly about working with hearing impaired children. Upon his death from cancer in 1993, he left a bequest to the SladeChild Foundation. A scholarship fund was established for hearing impaired children graduating from projects supported by the SladeChild Foundation, who desire to continue on with higher education. The SladeChild Foundation is currently a principal supporter of two children's projects catering solely to deaf and hearing impaired children. These two projects are RANCHO SORDO MUDO , Ensenada, Mexico. This project provides a home and school environment for about 50 deaf and hearing impaired boys and girls, ages 1 through 18. A full primary, secondary and high school education is provided for the children. In addition, international sign, landscaping, weaving, sports, are taught to these wonderful children. Rancho Sordo Mudo is the only school for deaf and hearing impaired children in all of Mexico. It charges no tuition, and is supported entirely by public donations. The children, however, must make it on their own after the age of 18. Many desire to continue on with their vocational or professional schooling, but do not have the financial resources to do so. The Landers Fund helps them.

Freed Top of page Studies of the Earth's response to large earthquakes can be viewed as large rock deformation experiments in which sudden stress changes induce viscous flow in the lower crust and upper mantle that lead to observable postseismic surface deformation . Laboratory experiments suggest that viscous flow of deforming hot lithospheric rocks is characterized by a power law in which strain rate is proportional to stress raised to a power, n . Here we show that a power-law model of viscous flow in the mantle with n = 3.5 successfully explains the spatial and temporal evolution of transient surface deformation following the 1992 Landers and 1999 Hector Mine , the upper mantle is weaker than the lower crust.

Edmond John Landers Captain A CO, 2ND BN, 18TH INF RGT, 1 INF DIV Army of the United States 07 July 1937 - 15 May 1968 Vacaville, California Panel 60E Line 024 The database page for Edmond John Landers 18 May 2004 Edmond was posted to 8th Army in Korea in January 1966 but shortly after taking up his new assignment he was reassigned to 7th Army (USAREUR) in Germany where he served in appointments as S2-3 and later as G3. In early 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and in September received his orders for service in Vietnam. He arrived at Tan Son Nhut Airbase Saigon on 29 February 1968 and was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, and was posted to the 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, at the Thu Duc Water Treatment Plant. He served as S-2 (Intelligence Officer) under the command of LTC Max L. Waldrop. In April Edmond was appointed Company Commander of Alpha Company, 2/18 Infantry, located at the Thu Duc Electric Power Plant. On Wednesday 15 May 1968 while actively commanding his company in a Recce In Force operation near the village of Thu Duc, Captain Edmond J. Landers, callsign "Darkness Alpha Six" was killed in action along with seven other members of his command after his unit consisting of HQ CP and two Rifle Platoons was ambushed by an NVA/VC Battalion. For his actions that day Edmond was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, RVN Gallantry Cross with palm, and the National Order of Vietnam 5th Class along with many other awards.

Story Tools RELATED Columnist Ann Landers dies at 83 SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) Fans of celebrated advice columnist Ann Landers paid nearly $250,000 to snag her desk, combat boots, antique furniture and letters at an auction of some of the late syndicated writer's belongings. Margo Howard, daughter of Landers, said with no room to store all the treasures her mother collected over the years in her 16-room Chicago, Illinois, apartment, Sunday's auction was both a practical solution and a way to share history. "Because of who she was I thought that people who wanted to have that kind of connection to her should have the chance," Howard said. The auction, held by San Francisco auction house Butterfields, brought nearly $250,000, with many lots sold to Internet and phone bidders from across the country, according to the auction house. Landers, whose real name was Esther "Eppie" Lederer, died of multiple myeloma on June 22 at age 83. For four decades she delivered snappy, timely advice on seemingly every topic from broken hearts to depression, financial woes to sexuality a connection with readers that spanned generations and continents.
