Protestant Marian Devotion Many Catholics might not realize that they are not the only ones who love and honor Our Lady. Several Protestant Christian poets have written beautiful poems about the Mother of God. Let us look at some of these Marian poems. Sir Water Scott (1771-1832), a poet and novelist, wrote a beautiful verse to Our Lady extolling the power of Our Lady's help as he depicts a woman praying to her: Ave Maria, Maiden mild. Thou canst hear [us] from the wild. Thou canst save amid despair. Henry Wardsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), the great American poet, wrote of Our Lady: And if our faith gave us nothing more Than this Example of all Womanhood, So mild, so merciful, so strong, so good, So patient, peaceful, loyal, loving, pure This were enough to prove it higher and truer Than all the creeds the world had known before. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) in his "Hymn to the Virgin" has given us the now-famous phrase that Our Lady is "Our tainted nature’s solitary boast." Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) wrote the following lines in The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner
