William Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth, Cumbria, England and studied at Hawkshead in the Lake District and at Cambridge. After completing his education, Wordsworth journeyed through France and Switzerland via his feet. When he returned to France in 1790, Wordsworth had an affair with a French girl with whom he had a daughter. With the outbreak of the war in 1793, Wordsworth returned to England to live with his sister in Racedown, Dorset. After moving to Alfoxden, Somerset in 1797, Wordsworth met Samuel Taylor Coleridge . Together, they published Lyrical Ballads (1798), a volume of collected poems. After marrying Mary Hutchinson in 1802, Wordsworth began writing some of his greatest poetry including The Prelude (1805). Before his death at the age of 80, Wordsworth was given the honour of Poet Laureate in 1843.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

BOOKS on-line The Old Familiar Faces 1     I have had playmates, I have had companions,
2     In my days of childhood, in my joyful school-days,
3     All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. 4     I have been laughing, I have been carousing,
5     Drinking late, sitting late, with my bosom cronies,
6     All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. 7     I loved a love once, fairest among women;
8     Closed are her doors on me, I must not see her
9     All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. 10   I have a friend, a kinder friend has no man;
11   Like an ingrate, I left my friend abruptly;
12   Left him, to muse on the old familiar faces. 13   Ghost-like, I paced round the haunts of my childhood. 14   Earth seemed a desart I was bound to traverse, 15   Seeking to find the old familiar faces. 16   Friend of my bosom, thou more than a brother

Jonson, Ben (15721637); Joyce, James (1882-1941); Kyd, Thomas (1558-1594);Lamb, Charles (1775-1834); Lawrence, DH (1885-1930); Lyly, John (1554-1606)
http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.
