Krol retired in April after 29 years at the UI. "People would always ask, ‘Well, what are you going to do when you retire?’ " said Ed Krol, former assistant director of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). "And I didn’t have anything to do. So, finally, I sort of thought, ‘Well, I really like France.’ " So less than 24 hours after his April 30 retirement, Ed Krol and his wife, Margaret, were aboard a plane to Paris. After a five-day stay, Margaret, who is assistant vice president of Administrative Information Technology Services, returned to the states, and Ed headed for the shores of the Mediterranean for a leisurely week in Corsica.

Review by Paul A Glister (Reprinted with permission of CompuServe Magazine, published by CompuServe Incorporated.) Using the Internet makes me feel I've entered a science fiction movie. A few keystrokes can rocket me from a computer in North Carolina to CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Switzerland. There I can use a search tool called World Wide Web to connect to other resources worldwide, searching out information ranging from weather forecasts to library catalogs, from the minutes of high-tech meetings to the lyrics of popular songs. What made Ed Krol's "The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog" inevitable was this very diversity. The Internet is so big that no one can give you a good definition of it. Let's say it's a meta-network, a network of networks. More than 5,000 networks currently are involved, and user estimates range as high as ten million people worldwide. With roots in military research but now wide open to anyone with a PC, the Internet is an explorer's dream. But astoundingly, no single book has explained it well until Krol's, and another recent title, Tracy LaQuey and Jeanne C. Ryer's "The Internet Companion" (Addison-Wesley, 1992). Clearly, we owe Ed Krol quite a debt, and anyone with serious plans for tapping the Internet should have a copy of his book on the shelf. The best aspect of this book is that it offers a hands-on approach to Internet connectivity. Krol doesn't just rhapsodize about the wonders of Internet resources - he takes you to them by providing directions on how to get there. The last section of his book, in fact, is a collection of Internet destinations arranged alphabetically. It's not complete - on the ever-changing Internet, what could be? - but it's a useful directory.

And with the networks came multi billionaire business such as American Online. Those who support porn on the Internet say its with in there rights and everybody should have access to it. But parents are afraid that the Internet carries a large number of minor users who with almost no Internet experience can access porn. Medicinal Chemistry. Research Interests:
Xenobiotic metabolism and chemopreventive abilities of naturally occurring polyphenols. My research group is interested in the properties of lignans and flavonoids. Specifically we seek to understand the underlying chemistry responsible for both their chemopreventive and toxicological properties. Flaxseed lignans are believed to be responsible for a number of beneficial health effects including reduction in LDL cholesterol, mammary and colon cancer and Type II diabetes. We plan to investigate the reactions that mammalian lignans derived from flaxseed undergo during oxidative stress to determine how these lignans contribute to chemoprevention. The lignan NDGA is closely related in structure to the flaxseed lignans, yet NDGA use has been associated with kidney toxicity. Our group will study how the subtle differences in lignan structure can influence the reactivity of these compounds.

Overview Families Served Classes Children's Program ... Publications
Overview
The Intergenerational Literacy Project began offering literacy instruction to parents in 1989. The program was developed in collaboration with 17 community organizations and is guided by a Board of Collaborators representing participating parents, the Chelsea Public Schools, Boston University and community organizations. The program seeks to accomplish the general goal of supporting families in working with their children, both to attain the instructional objectives of the schools and to reinforce positive attitudes toward education. To accomplish the larger goal, two sub-goals and objectives have been outlined: to improve the literacy skills of participating adults and to improve literacy knowledge among preschool and school-aged children. There is strong evidence that substantial progress is being made toward meeting the above-mentioned goals. A summary of that evidence follows. Back to top Families Served Since the program began in 1989, over 1,400 families have participated in the ILP. During the 2002-03 academic year, the fourteenth year of the program, a total of 252 families were served. Of these, 230 completed one or more instructional cycles. Participants included mothers, fathers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and siblings of children under the age of 10. The total number of children in these families was 449. The families originated from 24 different countries and spoke 13 different first languages, with Spanish the predominant language.

Book review by Roy Johnson of Kiersten ConnorSax and Ed Krol The Whole Internetthe Next Generation .
http://www.mantex.co.uk/reviews/krol.htm
Home Tutorials Bookshop Software ... Subscribe here for our free email newsletter The Whole Internet Updated version of first complete Internet guide. The Whole Internet was one of the earliest-ever computer books to become a best-seller. That was in 1992, when the first major wave of Net users needed information, and there as very little of it about. Ed Krol produced a manual which was well informed, comprehensive, and examined the technology in detail. However, it wasn't very easy to read, and you needed to grapple with an arcane command-line interface which assumed you had grown up with Unix as a second language. This new version is an update and complete re-write. It is based on the big changes which have come over the Net and the way it is used in the last eight years. Number one development of course is the Web, which moves up from a subsidiary chapter in the original to occupy the centre of this edition. Former features such as Gopher, Archie, and Veronica on the other hand are relegated to a footnote section called 'Archaic Search Technologies'.
But this difference also makes the manual easier to read and understand. The emphasis has been changed from how the Net works, to how it can be used. There is far less impenetrable code cluttering the pages. Instead we get clean screen shots and nice photographs of what the Net looks like on screen, not at the DOS prompt. Ed Krol has been been very fortunate in choosing his co-author, and their co-operation has produced a far more
