    Contributed by Mrs. J. B. Noland (Anna Turley), Richmond, Kentucky,
    Genealogist, Boonsboro Chapter Daughters of the American
    Revolution. The Nolands are said to have removed from Maryland to Virginia. They settled early in Kentucky County, afterwards the State of Kentucky. In 1786 Henry Noland's was one of the 131 names signed to a petition to divide Lincoln County into Lincoln, Madison, and Mercer. Of his large family, four sons and three daughters settled in Platte County, Missouri. John W. Noland lived two miles beyond the old "Cane Spring Church," built in 1803, on the Red River Road. His house is still standing and in the rear is the Noland grave yard. Printers , New York Above is an exact copy of the fly leaf of the Bible as printed. On the back of the fly leaf the following is written: "John Noland's Bible 17th 1821

    SEDGWICK CITY.
    For the names of the first settlers in Sedgwick and vicinity, and the early events that transpired, we would refer the reader to the pages on which may be found the general county history. Sedgwick City was laid off in June, 1870, by the Sedgwick town Company, T. Floyd, president. The original town site, which consisted of eighty acres, was laid off by John Corgan, in the interests of T. S. Floyd. the first store in Sedgwick, if not in the county, was erected and opened by William H. McOwen, in July of the same year. Judge R. W. P. Muse, his first customer, purchased the first goods sold in the county. The postoffice was established in the summer of the same year, T. S. Floyd Postmaster. After officiating eighteen months he was succeeded by O. Y. Hart, who remained in office until August, 1872, when C. H. Goodell, the present Postmaster, received his appointment. The money order department of this office was established in July, 1877. In the first schoolhouse erected in the county, September, 1870, C. S. Bullock and wife were teachers. In 1875-6, the present handsome brick school building was erected at a cost of $4,000.

    Geneticist, Physician, Pathologist James E. Bowman, Jr. was born in Washington, DC on February 5, 1923. He earned a Bachelor of Science and an MD from Howard University. Dr. Bowman served as Chief Pathologist of the Medical Nutrition Laboratory for the United States Army, between 1953-55. Dr. Bowman was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, from 1962 to 1967, where he was also Medical Director of the Blood Bank. Between 1967 and 1981, Professor Bowman was elevated from Associate Professor to Full Professor at the University of Chicago and served as Director of Laboratories during this time. Between 1973-1984, Dr. Bowman was the Director of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, University of Chicago.
