JOSEPH CONRAD

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)
Major Works:
The Nigger of the Narcissus Lord Jim (1900), "Youth" (1902), "Heart of Darkness" (1902), "Typhoon" (1903), Nostromo The Secret Agent Under Western Eyes Chance The Shadow Line The Rover Biographical Notes: Almayer's Folly , was published when Conrad was thirty-eight, and the many works he published over the next twenty years had little popular success (A number of important contemporary novelists did admire him greatly, though.). Chance , in 1913, was Conrad's first financial and popular success. By the end of his life Conrad was established as one of the leading "Modernists," and by the 1940s he was considered one of the most important British writers of the twentieth century, a position he still enjoys today. From Polish to French to English
"Gorgeous word-painting" is how one critic describes Conrad's early prose, referring to such passages as his evocation of exotic eastern islands: "clothed in their dark garments of leaves, in a great hush of silver and azure, where the sea without murmur meets the sky in a ring of magic stillness." It is a minor wonder that Conrad came to be so much admired for his style and powerful command of the English, his third language. His father was a student of English literature, and as a boy Conrad read Shakespeare and Dickens in translation, but he did not learn English until joining the British merchant marine in his late teens. Conrad was proud of his Polish heritage, but even late in life French was the language he was most comfortable with. It is amazing to realize that Conrad composed his fiction by thinking in Polish, translating his thoughts into French, and then recording them on paper in English.

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)
1857 BORN: Josef Teodor Konrad Nalech Korzeniowski on Dec. 3, 1857, in a part of Russia that once belonged to Poland changed his name to Joseph Conrad when he came to Britain because his name was virtually unpronounceable and unspellable to English speakers 1862 father exiled because of his political beliefs that believed Poland should be liberated from Russian oppression. 1865 the strain of exile in northern Russia took its toll on an already fragile Evalina, Conrad's mother and she died after three years in exile. 1869 Apollo, Conrad's father, suffering from tuberculosis and no longer considered a threat to Russia was allowed to go home. He died in Krakow that year. His uncle took in Conrad. The traumatic experiences of his childhood made him want to leave Poland forever, yet he felt guilty about wanting to leave his homeland. 1874 His uncle had connections in the shipping industry, so Conrad set out to become a sailor, which his relatives felt was an insult to their social status and cultural background. Two months before his 17 th birthday, he set out for France to work with the French ships (French was his second language).

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer, a dreamer, adventurer, and gentleman. In his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you fell - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902). Conrad discouraged interpretation of his sea novels through evidence from his life, but several of his novels drew the material, events, and personalities from his own experiences in different parts of the world. While making his first voyages to the West Indies, Conrad met the Corsican Dominic Cervoni, who was later model for his characters filled with a thirst for adventure. "We live, as we dream - alone."
