Hot off the presses! Based on the Environmental Design Archives' Thomas Church Collection, our own faculty curator, Marc Treib, has edited and contributed to a new publication entitled THOMAS CHURCH, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: Designing a Modern California Landscape . Published by William Stout Publishers and available for purchase at William Stout Architectural Books online. From William Stout Publishers: "More than any other American landscape architect, Thomas Church (1902-1976) defined the domestic landscape of the postwar United States. He worked with people in mind: what they required and how they used the space came first and foremost in his design. Thomas Church, Landscape Architect is a pioneering work that explores the many dimensions of Church's contributions to landscape architecture, including his writings as well as his designs. Four experts in the field present his story as a mosaic of words and images. Using documentation in the Environmental Design Archives at the University of California, Berkeley, the book presents many Church drawings never published before, including a number of studies that illustrate his working manner. Historic and contemporary photographs present the landscape in color and monochrome." Home Again The Archives is open for research in our newly remodeled space in Wurster Hall. Located on the second floor of the South Tower, the Archives has a secure research room, a preservation workspace, and an environmentally controlled storage vault. Inaugural Address of William Henry Harrison
    THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 1841
Called from a retirement which I had supposed was to continue for the residue of my life to fill the chief executive office of this great and free nation, I appear before you, fellow-citizens, to take the oaths which the Constitution prescribes as a necessary qualification for the performance of its duties; and in obedience to a custom coeval with our Government and what I believe to be your expectations I proceed to present to you a summary of the principles which will govern me in the discharge of the duties which I shall be called upon to perform. It was the remark of a Roman consul in an early period of that celebrated Republic that a most striking contrast was observable in the conduct of candidates for offices of power and trust before and after obtaining them, they seldom carrying out in the latter case the pledges and promises made in the former. However much the world may have improved in many respects in the lapse of upward of two thousand years since the remark was made by the virtuous and indignant Roman, I fear that a strict examination of the annals of some of the modern elective governments would develop similar instances of violated confidence. The broad foundation upon which our Constitution Constitution Constitution Constitution is written, disputes have arisen as to the amount of power which it has actually granted or was intended to grant.

    WILLIAM I 'THE CONQUEROR' (r. 1066-1087)
Born around 1028, William was the illegitimate son of Duke Robert I of Normandy, and Herleve (also known as Arlette), daughter of a tanner in Falaise. Known as 'William the Bastard' to his contemporaries, his illegitimacy shaped his career when he was young.
On his father's death in 1035, William was recognised by his family as the heir - an exception to the general rule that illegitimacy barred succession. His great uncle looked after the Duchy during William's minority, and his overlord, King Henry I of France, knighted him at the age of 15. From 1047 onwards, William successfully dealt with rebellion inside Normandy involving his kinsmen and threats from neighbouring nobles, including attempted invasions by his former ally King Henry I of France in 1054 (the French forces were defeated at the Battle of Mortemer) and 1057.
William's military successes and reputation helped him to negotiate his marriage to Mathilda, daughter of Count Baldwin V of Flanders. At the time of his invasion of England, William was a very experienced and ruthless military commander, ruler and administrator who had unified Normandy and inspired fear and respect outside his duchy.

    http://www.angeltowns.com/town/peerage/02patrick.htm
KNIGHTS OF ST.PATRICK The Order of St.Patrick was instituted by George III in 1783, for the purpose of establishing in Ireland a fraternity of knights as a counterpart to the Order of the Garter in England and the Order of the Thistle in Scotland. A Royal Warrant, dated 5 February 1783 and addressed to Earl Temple (later Marquess of Buckingham),the then Lord Lieutenant, authorised the issue of letters patent under the Great Seal of Ireland for the institution of the Order. The Statutes of the Order ordained, amongst other things, that Knights should be 15 in number. In July 1821,George IV dispensed with this statute and appointed six extra Knights at his coronation, but eight years passed before the Royal Warrant was issued to authorise this change. In the meantime, four of these extra Knights had been elected to fill vacancies caused by deaths which had occurred in the constituent number of fifteen. At his coronation,William IV nominated four more extra Knights and on 24 January 1833 the limitation on the number of Knights was increased from 15 to 22.

    94. KNIGHTS OF THE THISTLE The Date Of The Foundation Of The Most
A number of Knights of the Thistle have subsequently been 26 Oct 1768, William Henry Kerr,Marquess of Lothian, 1710, 12 Apr 1775, 64
    http://www.angeltowns.com/town/peerage/02thistle.htm
KNIGHTS OF THE THISTLE The date of the foundation of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is somewhat obscure. Some writers state the the Order was originally founded in AD 787 by Achaius, who was King of Scotland between 787 and 819. Legend has it that Achaius, while engaged in battle with Athelstan,King of the West Saxons, saw in the heavens a vision of the cross upon which St.Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, had suffered martyrdom. Having been successful in the battle,Achaius established the Order of knighthood. Historically, however, the lives of Achaius and Athelstan were about 150 years apart and,as a result, this version of the origin of the Order of the Thistle must be dismissed as being mythical. Other writers state that the Order was founded in 1500 and revived in 1540. Whatever the correct date of founding may have been, there seems to be no doubt that, even if the Order of the Thistle had previously flourished,it had fallen into disuse by the time of the Reformation. The Order of the Thistle as we know it today was founded by King James II of England (and King James VII of Scotland) by a warrant dated 29 May 1687. This warrant commanded Letters

    - What Happened After Hastings -
After the Battle of Hastings, William still had to conquer England. He marched from Hastings, crossing the Thames at Wallingford and then on towards London. At Little Berkhamsted he received the surrender of the city. William took hostages to ensure that the surrender was kept. William wanted to be crowned King as soon as possible. His Coronation took place on Christmas Day, 1066. It was held at Westminster Abbey, which had been built by Edward the Confessor. During the Coronation, as the people inside the Abbey shouted out their acceptance of William, the troops outside thought a fight had broken out. Fearing that William had been attacked they began to set fire to Saxon houses. As the Norman soldiers could not understand the language of the Saxons, and the Saxons could not understand the language of the Normans, it was difficult for them to communicate. William kept the promises he had made to the barons who fought with him to give them English land. He gave them lands taken from the Saxons. In exchange, the barons had to be loyal to William and provide knights to fight for him when he needed them. They might also have to pay sums of money to the king. William made sure that the barons could not easily rise against him by giving them pieces of land in different parts of the country, which made it difficult to raise a private army in secret.
