William Henry Harrison was born in Charles City County, Va., on Feb. 9, 1773. Joining the army in 1791, he was active in Indian fighting in the Northwest, became secretary of the Northwest Territory in 1798 and governor of Indiana in 1800. He married Anna Symmes in 1795. Growing discontent over white encroachments on Indian lands led to the formation of an Indian alliance under Tecumseh to resist further aggressions. In 1811, Harrison won a nominal victory over the Indians at Tippecanoe and in 1813 a more decisive one at the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh was killed. After resigning from the army in 1814, Harrison had an obscure career in politics and diplomacy, ending up 20 years later as a county recorder in Ohio. Nominated for president in 1835 as a military hero whom the conservative politicians hoped to be able to control, he ran surprisingly well against Van Buren in 1836. Four years later, he defeated Van Buren but caught pneumonia and died in Washington on April 4, 1841, a month after his inauguration. Harrison was the first president to die in office.

Family Tree Biographical Sketches (Written by Sharon Ochsenhirt with additions by Cara Gilgenbach) Joel Knight, Jr. was the son of Joel Knight and Esther Farr. He spent some winters teaching, but most of his life was spent farming. His brief diary entries make note of the weather and his daily work on the farm. Fanny Maria Duncan Knight was the daughter of Abel and Lydia Duncan. Fanny's father was a doctor who died in 1813 of the Spotted Fever when Fanny was very young. Fanny's mother, Lydia, lived to be 90 and spent most of her life with Fanny's family. Fanny married Joel Knight, Jr. in 1829. She gave birth to eight children, two of whom died in childhood. Fanny lived most of her life in Vermont. During 1878, she lived with her son Charles in Akron. It appears that she was active in her church and was interested in women's rights. In many of the family's letters, Fanny is praised for her fine letter-writing abilities. Her diaries provide some insight into daily life at Orchard Dale (the Knight Family home in Dummerston, Vermont). Sophie Knight McCollester was the oldest child in the Knight family. She married Sullivan McCollester who was a Universalist minister. In 1872, the McCollesters moved from New England to Akron, Ohio where Sullivan served as the first president of the newly founded Buchtel College (predecessor to the University of Akron). Sophie and Sullivan had a son named Lee, some of whose letters are included in the collection.

In Our Store The Knights Templar - www.templarhistory.com William Marshall - The Flower of Chivalry Anyone seriously interested in the Knights Templar is likely, at some time in their life, to make a pilgrimage to London, there to visit the district known to this day as 'Temple'. This area was, in the Middle Ages, the headquarters of the Knights Templar in England and represented a major centre for Templar thought and influence. Little remains of the buildings placed upon this site, except for the famous Templar Round Church, mentioned elsewhere in this edition. Within the Church there can be found a number of effigies of a very early date, one of which is that of one William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. William is perhaps not one of the best known characters in either English or Templar history, and this state of affairs is perhaps somewhat regrettable, since, by his life and his honour, he almost certainly represented every ideal for which the Templars, in their early days, became renown. William Marshall was far from being a simple Templar Knight. He was born around 1146, the second son of John the Marshall, a trusted knight of Norman ancestry, and of Sibyl, who was a sister of Patrick, Earl of Salisbury. Being a younger son, William did not inherit his Father's titles and so becoming a knight was probably to be expected for one whose proclivities obviously did not extend to high office in the Church. William was duly sent off to Normandy, to be trained by the hereditary Chamberlain of the region, William of Tancarville, and was eventually knighted in the year 1167.
