William Kirby (1817-1906)
Text from A Century of Canadian Sonnets
Montmorency
The Master saith, "Look in thy heart and write
What thou hast heard the voices say, within
The flashing rainbows and the mist, the din
And avalanche of waters snowy white,
Of Montmorency leaping down the height."
I feel the throbbing of the joyous linn
Keep time and measure with my pulses in
A thrilling symphony of sound and sight.
For history, poetry, and wild romance,
The old, the new, Nature's exuberance
Peace, war, and lovelove still the best of all
Their story here on every side I learn,
And Wolfe's and Montcalm's rival camps discern
In the long thunder of the roaring fall.

Canadian Sonnets
Included here are all of the sonnets in English from A Century of Canadian Sonnets as well as links to sonnets in Representative Poetry On-Line and transcriptions of material from the Early Canadiana website. Many thanks to Professors D. M. R. Bentley of Canadian Poetry and Ian Lancashire of Representative Poetry On-Line for their helpful websites and advice. From A New Dimension: Notes on the Ecology of Canadian Poetry by D. M. R. Bentley In an Old Barn thus stand in a continuity which stretches back to the heroic couplets of Mackay's Quebec Hill and Goldsmith's The Rising Village and forward well into the present century, to the vignettes of habitant life cast in sonnet form that comprise F. O. Call's Homespun volume of 1926 and to the rhymed couplets of Leo Cox's depiction of the village of 'St. Pol', Quebec." "...[F]ixed forms such as the sonnet, which Karl Shapiro describes interestingly enough, as an "un-American activity" have appealed to some Canadian poets, including the majority of the 'Confederation' and McGill groups, because their use implied an alignment and continuity with the English and European traditions. " From The Poet-Impressionist: Some Landscapes by Archibald Lampman by Anne Compton "On the space framed by the sonnet form, he [Lampman] deftly and quickly strokes in the sense-data. In longer, more discursive poems such as 'The Frogs,' he is less of an impressionist. The sonnet and the short lyric were well suited to the paradox of impressionism-the arrest of the fleeting moment."

William Kirby Kirby, William (1817-1906), author, was born at Kingston-upon-Hull, England, on October 13, 1817, and came to Canada with his parents in 1832. He settled in Niagara, Upper Canada, in 1839, and for more than twenty years edited the Niagara Mail. From 1871 to 1895 he was collector of customs at Niagara. His first important publication was The U. E. (Niagara, 1859), a poem in Spenserian stanzas. His reputation rests mainly, however, on a novel, The golden dog Memoirs of the Servos family (Toronto, 1884), Canadian idyls (Welland, Ontario, 1894), Annals of Niagara (Lundy's Lane Historical Society, 1896), and a number of less important works. He died at Niagara on June 23, 1906. He married the daughter of John Whitmore, Niagara, and had two sons. In 1883 he became a charter member of the Royal Society of Canada.
