  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Rudyard Kipling
"Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865. His father, John Lockwood Kipling, was the author and illustrator of Beast and Man in India and his mother, Alice, was the sister of Lady Burne-Jones. "In 1871 Kipling was brought home from India and spent five unhappy years with a foster family in Southsea. It was during his time at the college that he began writing poetry and Schoolboy Lyrics was published privately in 1881. In the following year he started work as a journalist in India, and while there, produced a body of work, stories, sketches and poems - notably Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) - which made him an instant literary celebrity. "In 1892 he married an American, Caroline Balestier, and from 1892 to 1896 they lived in Vermont, where Kipling wrote The Jungle Book , published in 1894. In 1901 came

RUDYARD KIPLING AND MUSIC. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was the bard of [the British] Empire in all its manifestations. As he was born in India it is natural that many of his writings, poetry or prose, feature the sub-continent, but others recall the men, soldiers, sailors and so on, which bound the Empire together and If , apparently once set to music by Bantock , personifies the "stiff upper-lip" which built the Empire. This is not to say that Kipling was jingoistic. His poem Recessional appears indeed to foretell the decline of Empire. Both Sullivan and Elgar considered setting this to music, although neither got round to doing so (1); one may think, however, that Elgar 's Second Symphony catches its spirit faithfully enough. Many composers, Sullivan and Elgar included, set Kipling's words but we start this doubtless incomplete, fragmentary even, survey of music inspired by Kipling with the incidental music written for screen adaptations of his prose works. Curiously, perhaps, nearly all of them were American and most of these had scores composed by some of the all-time greats among Hollywood's music moguls: Captains Courageous Franz Waxman Wee Willie Winkie Alfred Newman Gunga Din Newman again)

Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born on 30 December 1865 and spent the first six years of his life in Bombay. In 1871 he was brought home to England and placed in the unhappy care of a rigid Calvinistic foster family in Southsea, where he was treated with some cruelty. At age 12 he was removed and sent to public school, where he fared better. Whilst at college Kipling began writing poetry, from which Schoolboy Lyrics was published in 1881. The following year, at the age of 17, he started work as a journalist, back again in India, and while there produced a series of books that made him an instant literary celebrity, notably Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) and Soldiers Three (1888). Kipling developed a reputation as a master of the short story form. He married Caroline Balestier, an American, in 1892, living in Vermont until 1896 until after the death of his daughter Josephine, and a bitter quarrel with his wife’s relatives drove him home. It was whilst living in Vermont that Kipling wrote The Jungle Book Kim followed in 1901, and

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Kipling, (Joseph) Rudyard (1865-1936), English writer and Nobel laureate, who wrote novels, poems, and short stories, mostly set in India and Burma (now known as Myanmar) during the time of British rule. Kipling was born December 30, 1865, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and at age six, was sent to be educated in England. From 1882 to 1889 he edited and wrote short stories for the Civil and Military Gazette of Lahore, India. He then published Departmental Ditties (1886), satirical verse dealing with civil and military barracks life in British colonial India, and a collection of his magazine stories called Plain Tales from the Hills (1887). Kipling's literary reputation was established by six stories of English life in India, published in India between 1888 and 1889, that revealed his profound identification with, and appreciation for, the land and people of India. Thereafter he traveled extensively in Asia and the United States, married Caroline Balestier, an American, in 1892, lived briefly in Vermont, and finally settled in England in 1903. He was a prolific writer; most of his work attained wide popularity. He received the 1907 Nobel Prize in literature, the first English author to be so honored. Kipling died January 18, 1936, in London.

    Kipling, Rudyard (1865-1936)
page: "Seek not to question other than / The books I leave behind," counseled Kipling in "The Appeal," a two-line poem written shortly before his death that editor M. M. Kaye describes as "a plea to posterity to respect his private life." Such an appeal proves especially ironic having been made by a man who deliberately lived by far the greatest part of his life in the public eye. In his late teens Kipling hurried onto the public stage as a newspaperman in India; the poems and prose vignettes of British colonial and native life in South Asia that he wrote for local publications proved wildly successful when collected and republished in book form in England. They established him as one of the most original voices of his generation. For the entire of his adult life Kipling fashioned himself as the conscience of the English-speaking world, refusing government honors in order to remain free to pontificate publicly on a host of social, political, and economic issues.
