British writer whose major works, including the short story “The Man Who Would Be King” (1889), a collection of children's stories, The Jungle Book (1894), and the novel Kim (1901), are set in British-occupied India. He won the 1907 Nobel Prize for literature. Encyclopedia Kipling, Rudyard, 1865–1936, English author, b. Bombay, India. Educated in England, Kipling returned to India in 1882 and worked as an editor on a Lahore paper. His early poems were collected in Departmental Ditties Barrack-Room Ballads (1892), and other volumes. His first short stories of Anglo-Indian life appeared in Plain Tales from the Hills (1888) and Soldiers Three (1888). In 1889 he returned to London, where his novel The Light That Failed (1890) appeared. Kipling's masterful stories and poems interpreted India in all its heat, strife, and ennui. His romantic imperialism and his characterization of the true Englishman as brave, conscientious, and self-reliant did much to enhance his popularity. RUDYARD KIPLING RUDYARD KIPLING was born in Bombay on December 30th 1865, son of John Lockwood Kipling, an artist and teacher of architectural sculpture, and his wife Alice. His mother was one of the talented and beautiful Macdonald sisters, four of whom married remarkable men, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Poynter, Alfred Baldwin, and John Lockwood Kipling himself. Young Rudyard's earliest years were blissfully happy in an India full of exotic sights and sounds. But at the tender age of five he was sent back to England to stay with a foster family in Southsea, where he was desperately unhappy. The experience would colour some of his later writing. When he was twelve he went to the United Services College at Westward Ho! near Bideford, where the Headmaster, Cormell Price, a friend of his father and uncles, fostered his literary ability. , based on those schooldays, has been much relished by generations of schoolboys. Despite poor eyesight which handicapped him on the games field, he began to blossom. In 1882, aged sixteen, he returned to Lahore, where his parents now lived, to work on the

RUDYARD KIPLING A chronology of his life and work 30 December, Joseph Rudyard Kipling ("RK") born in Bombay, son of John Lockwood Kipling (Head of Department of Architectural Sculpture at the government School of Art) and of Alice Kipling, née Macdonald. Both of his grandfathers were Methodist ministers First visit to England; his sister Alice ("Trix") born there. RK and Trix again taken to England and left there for six years, boarding with Captain and Mrs Holloway at Lorne Lodge, Southsea; their parents returned to India. Captain Holloway died. Mrs Holloway disliked RK, who was also bullied by her son. RK became deeply unhappy. He later described occasional holidays spent in London with his mother's sister Georgiana Burne-Jones and her husband, the artist Edward Burne-Jones, as "a Paradise that I verily believe saved me. Alice Kipling arrived from India and took her son away from Southsea, though Trix remained there for a time. RK became a pupil at the United Services College, Westward Ho!, Devon, a cheap boarding school for the sons of army officers and civil servants, where conditions were spartan but the teaching good. Returning to Southsea to fetch his sister, RK met her fellow-boarder Florence Garrard with whom he fell in love. The relationship, more important to him than to Flo, would be broken off and resumed several times.

Baden-Powell needed an concept around which to build the younger boy program of Scouting. He found it with a popular book by the repected British author, Rudyard Kipling. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India. From 1892 to 1889, he was on the editorial staff of the Civil and Military Gazette, the daily newspaper of Lahore, India, for which he wrote short stories. In 1892, he married an American girl, Caroline Balestier. Many of his first writings were about the British soldier in India. The Jungle Book was written in 1894. It was originally published in chapter form in the American children's magazine, Saint Nicholas. From 1892 to 1896, the Kiplings lived in Brattleboro, Vermont on an estate belonging to Mrs. Kipling's family. In the pleasant New England surroundings, he wrote Captains Courageous and the two Jungle Book s. These books earned him the Nobel prize in Literature in 1907. Kipling was the author of "The Scout's Patrol Song" which was the official Boy Scout song. Part I of the 1908 booklet, "Scouting For Boys" included a condensed version of Kipling's Kim . He was also the father of a Scout and later a comissioner in the British Scouting program.. In 1924, he attended a rally of 6 thousand Wolf Cubs at the Imperial Jamboree at Wembley where he witnessed what Baden-Powell had made of his writings..

Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865, the son of an Anglo-Indian Professor of Architectural Sculpture. There he was brought up in the care of "ayahs," or native nurses, who taught him Hindustani and the native lore that always haunted his imagination and can be seen clearly reflected in Just So Stories
At the age of six he was sent to school in England at Westward Ho!, the scene of In 1883 he returned to India and embarked on a career of journalism, writing the news stories as well as the tales and ballads that began to make his reputation.
After seven years, he went back to England, the literary "Star of the Hour." He married an American girl and stayed in Vermont from 1892 to 1894. Then he settled down in the English countryside where he remained, except for a few trips abroad, for the rest of his life. He died in 1936.
