TORRENCE, RIDGELY, Class of 1897 (1875-1950)
Ridgely Torrence was a poet, a playwright, and editor of The New Republic from 1920-1924. A checklist of Torrence's works appeared in the Chronicle. For particulars refer to: Willard Thorp, "The Achievement of Ridgely Torrence" in the Princeton University Library Chronicle XII, 3 (Spring, 1951) pp. 103-11 [full text] . It lists forty editions of his works in the Library, of which 25 are in the General Rare Books Collection (Ex). The Manuscripts Division holds a collection [(MSS) C0172] which documents his long literary career. Approximately 10,000 letters between Torrence (Princeton Class of 1897), his family and friends, plus manuscripts of his work and those of his literary friends, exist in the collection. In addition, there are documents, scrapbooks, diaries, report cards from Torrence's Miami College (Oxford) and Princeton University days, daguerreotypes and photographs, memorabilia, and genealogical records, some dating as early as 1833. Represented in his personal and editorial correspondence are most of the important literary figures of his time, including Robert Frost, Vachel Lindsay, William Vaughn Moody, and Edward Arlington Robinson.

    London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

WH (18411922); Keats, John (1795-1821); Kingsley, Charles (1819-1875);Kipling, Rudyard (1865-1936); Landor, WS (1775-1864); Lang, Andrew (1844-1912)
    http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.

This place, called also Bytheford , of which its modern appellation is a variation, derives its name from being situated near an ancient ford on the river Torridge . . . after the revocation of the edict of Nantes, in 1685, many French Protestants settled in the town, and established the manufacture of silk and cotton; a great quantity of wool was imported from Spain, and, in 1699, its trade with Newfoundland was inferior only to that of London and Exeter . . . Ship-building is extensively carried on: during the late war, several frigates were launched at this port, and there are eight or ten dockyards, in which smaller vessels are built. The principal articles of manufacture are cordage, sails, and common earthenware; there are also several tan-yards, and a small lace manufactory. . . The free grammar school, of remote foundation, was rebuilt in 1657 . . . A charity school is supported by the trustees of the Bridge Estate, and by subscription; a building has likewise been erected for a national school." Charl'z Kingsli i anglijskij christianskij socializm serediny XIX veka. (Charles Kingsley and English Christian Socialism in the Middle of the Nineteenth Century)
    Moskva, ROSSPEN , 2001; ISBN 5.8243.0231.6, 296 pp.
This monograph, which is the first Russian historiographical treatment of the subject, explores the sources of Christian Socialism in England and the life and activities of Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), priest, writer, historian, and one of the founders of English Christian Socialism. It shows how his social and theological views developed and describes his political activities in collaboration with F.D. Maurice and J.M. Ludlow. The idea of Christian Socialism, as well as Kingsley's efforts to bring it into practice are treated in detail. These are illustrated in a historical description of the creation, functioning, and disintegration of Christian-socialist producers' cooperatives. Extensive use has been made of the rich collections on this subject that are housed in the Moscow State Socio-Political Library (GOPB) and the IISH. The book is written in Russian. Top
