When all the world is young, lad,
And all the trees are green;
And every goose a swan, lad,
And every lass a queen; Then hey for boot and horse, lad, And round the world away; Young blood must have its course, lad, And every dog his day. When all the world is old, lad, And all the trees are brown; And all the sport is stale, lad, And all the wheels run down; Creep home, and take you place there, The spent and maimed among: God grant you find one face there, You loved when all was young.

CHARLES KINGSLEY
(1819-1875) (aka Parson Lot) Charles Kingsley was a prominent Anglican clerygyman, writer, social reformer, political activist, scientist, Cambridge professor, chaplain to Queen Victoria, private tutor to the future King Edward VII, and canon of Westminster Abbey. His novels were widely read in the Victorian era and helped influence social developments in Britain. He was one of the first churchmen to support Charles Darwin’s theories and to seek a reconciliation between science and Christian doctrine. Kingsley was one of the founders of Christian Socialism and was also associated with “Muscular Christianity” and wrote many articles and pamphlets under the pseudonym Parson Lot. Despite his varied accomplishments, he is now best known as a writer for children, where his reputation rests mainly on The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby , and, to a lesser extent, Westward Ho!

Seeds, so long in darkness sleeping, Burst at last from winter snows. Earth with heaven above rejoices; Fields and gardens hail the spring; Shaughs and woodlands ring with voices, While the wild birds build and sing. You, to whom your Maker granted Powers to those sweet birds unknown, Use the craft by God implanted; Use the reason not your own. Here, while heaven and earth rejoices, Work of fingers, chant of voices, Like the birds who build and sing. The above poem can be found for example in:

    Title : A Farewell Poet : Charles Kingsley Date : 7 Mar 2003 I Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq A Farewell I My fairest child, I have no song to give you; No lark could pipe to skies so dull and grey: Yet, ere we part, one lesson I can leave you For every day. II Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever; Do noble things, not dream them, all day long: And so make life, death, and that vast for-ever One grand, sweet song. Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) A prime example of what I call Good Advice to the Younger Generation - what raises this one above the common herd, I think, is the supreme quotability of the line "Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever" - Kingsley gets it absolutely right, though ironically the line itself is nothing if not clever. Whether one good line is enough to make a poem noteworthy is debatable - personally, I believe it is, especially in so short a piece. It possibly helps that I liked the quote long before I knew there was a poem attached to it. I also belong to the school of poetry criticism that looks for a poem's good points first, and speaks only later, if at all, of its flaws - this is, after all, about the enjoyment of poetry far more than it is about its dissection. (Which is not to say that I don't enjoy tearing into a particularly bad poem every now and then :)). martin Links: Biography of Kingsley: http://www.bartleby.com/65/ki/Kingsley.html

    55. CHARLES KINGSLEY - LoveToKnow Article On CHARLES KINGSLEY
    Kingsley, Charles (18191875), English clergyman, poet and novelist, was born onthe 12th of June 1819, at Holne vicarage, Dartmoor, Devon.
    http://21.1911encyclopedia.org/K/KI/KINGSLEY_CHARLES.htm
    CHARLES KINGSLEY
    KINGSLEY, CHARLES Both as a writer and in his personal intercourse with men, Kingsley was a thoroughly stimulating teacher. As with his own teacher, Maurice, his influence on other men rather consisted in inducing them to think for themselves than in leading them to adopt his own views, never, perhaps, very definite. But his healthy and stimulating influence was largely due to the fact that he interpreted the thoughts which were stirring in the minds of many of his contemporaries. As a preacher he was vivid, eager and earnest, equally plainspoken and uncompromising when preaching to a fashionable congregation or to his own village poor. One of the very best of his writings is a sermon called The Message of the Church to Working Men; and the best of his published discourses are the Twenty-five Village Sermons which he preached in the early years of his Eversley life. As a novelist his chief power lay in his descriptive faculties. The descriptions of South American scenery in Westward Ho!, of the Egyptian desert in Ilypatia, of the North Devon scenery in Two Years Ago, are among the most brilliant pieces of wordpainting in English prose-writing; and the American scenery is even more vividly and more truthfully described when he had seen it only by the eye of his imagination than in his work Al Last, which was written after he had visited the tropics. His sympathy for children taught him how to secure their interests. His version of the old Greek stories entitled The Heroes, and Water-babies and Madam How and Lady Why, in which he deals with popular natural history, take high rank among books for children.

    Charles Kingsley was born in 1819 . He received his education at Kings College and Cambridge. Afterwards, he became vicar at Eversley. Other professions included the position of Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University and chaplain to Queen Victoria.
    The Kingdom of Christ . Maurice rejected the idea of separation of church and state and argued that the church should be involved with addressing social problems. He rejects the ideas of individualism. In 1832, after the defeat of a bill in the House of Commons which would have given working class people the right to vote, Kingsley became part of the Chartists, a group that drew up a charter of political demands and stressed, what they referred to as moral force. They wanted to succeed through discussion and publication, and to avoid anything that would lead to violence. They felt they could reform parliamentary by presenting petitions, which advocated social reform to the House of Commons. He viewed nature as governed by a redemptive spirit, which allowed him to remain untroubled by Darwinism (Spartacus).
