African American Journey From Africa to America From Slavery to Freedom First Years of Freedom ... King's death
King, Martin Luther, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
(1929-1968), an African American Baptist minister, was the main leader of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's. He had a magnificent speaking ability, which enabled him to effectively express the demands of African Americans for social justice. King's eloquent pleas won the support of millions of peopleblacks and whitesand made him internationally famous. He won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for leading nonviolent civil rights demonstrations. In spite of King's stress on nonviolence, he often became the target of violence. White racists threw rocks at him in Chicago and bombed his home in Montgomery, Ala. Finally, violence ended King's life at the age of 39, when an assassin shot and killed him. Some historians view King's death as the end of the civil rights era that began in the mid-1950's. Under his leadership, the civil rights movement won wide support among whites, and laws that had barred integration in the Southern States were abolished. King became only the second American whose birthday is observed as a national holiday. The first was George Washington, the nation's first President.

"I've Been to the Mountaintop"
Memphis, Tennessee - April 3, 1968
Martin Luther King Jr. speaks at the civil rights march on Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. (National Archives) Martin Luther King Jr. felt poorly the night he delivered this speech, the last one of his life. The venue was a mass meeting held in the Bishop Charles Mason Temple Church of God. Andrew Young, who was with him at the time, said King initially decided not to speak at all that night. King and his small entourage - including Ralph Abernathy, Jesse Jackson, and Benjamin Hooks - had led a march that day protesting low pay for black garbage collectors in Memphis. A rainstorm was gathering. King decided he was too sick to preach. He asked his best friend, Abernathy, to speak instead. Once in the church, Abernathy felt King would have to speak to the crowd, so he phoned King and asked him to come down. Abernathy promised that he would still do the preaching; King would just have to say a few words. Abernathy spoke for more than half an hour, his words energizing the crowd. That called up the spirit in Reverend King, and he spoke that night without a single note in hand.

In November 1983 President Reagan signed legislation creating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The newly-created legislation marked the end of a nationwide lobbying effort that had been ongoing for 15 years. King is the only American besides George Washington to have a national holiday designated for his birthday (others, such as Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson have been celebrated in some states but not nationwide). Purdue University honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with Affirming the Dream X: Instruments for Change, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Human Relations in collaboration with the Diversity Resource Office, Black Cultural Center, Office of the Vice President for Housing and Food Services, and the Boiler Volunteer Network. Martin Luther King Jr (1929 - 1968)
King was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was pastor of a Baptist church, his mother a schoolteacher. Originally named Michael, he was renamed Martin when he was about six years old. He entered Morehouse College in 1944, and here he met Dr Benjamin Mays, a scholar who encouraged him to enter the ministry. After graduating in 1948, King went to Crozer Religious Seminary to undertake post-graduate study. He received his doctorate in 1955. Returning to the South to become pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, King first achieved national renown when he helped mobilise the black boycott of the Montgomery bus system in 1955. The boycott was organised after Rosa Parks, a black woman, refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, as local custom dictated - in the segregated South, black people were only permitted to sit at the back of the bus. The 382-day boycott led the bus company to change its regulations, and the Supreme Court declared such segregation unconstitutional. In 1957 King was active in the organisation of the Southern Leadership Christian Conference (SCLC), formed to co-ordinate civil rights protests against discrimination, and he was elected president. He advocated non-violent direct action modelled on the methods of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the protests against British rule in India that culminated in India's independence in 1947.
