MADNESS by: Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)
HE lonely farm, the crowded street,
    The palace and the slum,
Give welcome to my silent feet
    As, bearing gifts, I come.
Last night a beggar crouched alone,
    A ragged helpless thing;
I set him on a moonbeam throne
    Today he is a king.
Last night a king in orb and crown
    Held court with splendid cheer;
Today he tears his purple gown
And moans and shrieks in fear.
Not iron bars, nor flashing spears,
Not land, nor sky, nor sea,
    Nor love's artillery of tears
Can keep mine own from me.
    Serene, unchanging, ever fair,
    I smile with secret mirth
And in a net of mine own hair
    I swing the captive earth.

JOYCE KILMER
Alfred Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) was a young American poet who suffered a tragic death at the age of 31.
His poem Trees is probably the most quoted poem in American history.
Joyce Kilmer was born in Brunswick, New Jersey, and married Aline Murray on June 9, 1908. They had five children - Kenton, Michael, Deborah, Rose, and Christopher. His first collection of poetry, Summer of Love , was published in 1911, and was well received. However, it was the publication of Trees that established his reputation as a major American poet. Trees was first published in August 1913 in Poetry Magazine, and then became the title poem in his second collection, Trees and Other Poems, in 1914. He followed in 1917 with Main Street . A Catholic convert, his poetry exhibits humility and a deep respect for God and nature.
Kilmer joined the National Guard and was transferred to France in October of 1917, where he was shot and killed in the line of duty on July 30, 1918. He was buried there at Oise-Aisne, Fere-eu-Tardenois, and received the Croix de Guerre of France.
We include the poem Trees; The Singing Girl from Main Street; and his last poem, written on the battlefield in France during World War I, The Peacemaker, written six weeks before his death.

New York Times Sunday Magazine and Book Review Trees
The Peacemaker Upon his will he binds a radiant chain,
It is his task, the slave of Liberty,
With his own blood to wipe away a stain.
That pain may cease, he yields his flesh to pain.
To banish war, he must a warrior be.
He dwells in Night, eternal Dawn to see,
And gladly dies, abundant life to gain. What matters Death, if Freedom be not dead? Who fights for Freedom, goes with joyful tread To meet the fires of Hell against him hurled, And has for captain Him whose thorn-wreathed head Smiles from the Cross upon a conquered world.

Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) PRAYER OF A SOLDIER IN FRANCE M y shoulders ache beneath my pack
(Lie easier, Cross, upon His back). I march with feet that burn and smart
(Tread, Holy Feet, upon my heart) . Men shout at me who may not speak
(They scourged Thy back and smote Thy cheek). I may not lift a hand to clear
My eyes of salty drops that sear. (Then shall my fickle soul forget
Thy Agony of Bloody Sweat?) My rifle hand is stiff and numb
(From Thy pierced palm red rivers come). Lord, Thou didst suffer more for me
Than all the hosts of land and sea. So let me render back again
This millionth of Thy gift. Amen.

William Noel Hodgson was a Georgian poet in the style of Rupert Brooke . He volunteered in 1914, and served with the Devonshire Regiment. In September, 1915, during the Battle of Loos, "[u]nder heavy enemy fire Hodgson, three other young officers and a hundred men held a captured trench for 36 hours without reinforcements or food. Hodgson was awarded the Military Cross" (Powell, A Deep Cry 99). Marching out of this hell-hole, Hodgson composed the incredibly resilient " Back to Rest ." In 1916, Hodgson began writing stories, poems, and essays about the front under the pseudonym "Edward Melbourne." Hodgson was especially fond of telling tales about his resourceful "batman" (his aide). His pieces enjoyed an audience in the leading magazines of the day. As his unit waited to move up to its jumping off position at the Somme Offensive, Hodgson composed his last poem " Before Action ." On July 1st, Hodgson's battalion attacked the German trenches south of Mametz. "At the end of the day the bodies of 159 men, including Noel Hodgson were found. The body of Hodgson's batman was lying at his side. The men of the 9th Battalion were buried in their Mansel Copse trench, and a notice above the trench read: "The Devonshires held this trench. The Devonshires hold it still" (Powell

Blake, William
Blake was a poet, a painter and an engraver. Chambers writes that Blake's poetry "include some of the purest lyrics in the English language and express his ardent belief in the freedom of the imagination and his hatred of rationalism and materialism
Browning, Elizabeth Barrett
Suffered from a childhood spinal injury and was "doomed to invalidism and seclusion from the world" until she met Robert with whom she eloped, much to the consternation of her father. The Brownings fled to Italy, and there they spent the rest of their days (at least Elizabeth did). The Browning romance was celebrated in Rudolf Besier's The Barretts of Wimpole Street . Her poems run deep with religious feeling, with her love of Italy, and her love of Robert.
