Panorama, BBC1, Sunday 13 May, 2001 Response by Janet Kerr
May 14, 2001
Dear BBC I would like to reiterate and emphasise all that Stan Coombes of Horsham wrote in his email. There is so much the public wasn't told in the programme last night. Your Panorama producer and reporter have a history in Scotland of not understanding addiction, dependence, withdrawal or its aftermath. Is there no one at the BBC with enough perception to do a proper in depth programme on benzodiazepine addiction, the devastation it is causing to lives, marriages and families, the amazing difficulty of withdrawing completely, and the hidden cost to the NHS and to Society.
  • Benzodiazepine addicts are scared to relate mental problems to their GPs for fear of being locked away!
  • Benzodiazepine addicts are scared to "cut down" because they know they can't function without tablets and think they won't get them!
  • Benzodiazepine addicts are scared to ask their GPs if their tablets are doing them harm for fear of them being stopped!
It is so hard to believe or understand why MPs and The Medical Profession are still allowing it to happen!

And the knife went in... She was too late. He had already killed himself, though he was alive when she entered. In her arms he took his last breath after he said his last words: "I will always be with you". He died before she could say anything. Cold and motionless he laid there and couldn't feel the warm droplets splash onto him as she cried and continued holding him. Night... In the room flashing blue and green a spirit came. Who else it'd be but him, her love and her muse. Forever safe she felt. He was there, but not always seen... Soon she died. Her death: herself. Love and Have Lost By: ME Danny Cold. Lonely. Depressed. Tears turn ice cold while I lay here frozen in my bed. Is it really cold? Is it my heart, and soul that cause this? The heat runs right past me, around me. Nothing gets to me except for the cold.

    Unity in the Prairies
    By Justin Olynyk

Unity (1918) looks at how the Spanish Flu epidemic, which killed an estimated 20 to 50 million people worldwide at the end of World War I, affects the small town of Unity, Saskatchewan. When the epidemic starts to spread from eastern Canada, the town tries to isolate itself by not allowing trains to stop and burning outside mail. When a blind soldier named Hart comes to town, some residents fear that he may have this disease. I thought this play had completely the wrong tone. Playwright Kevin Kerr clearly wants to entertain the audience through laughter and unfortunately seems to make fun of this tragic period in history. Some of his humour, like the juvenile fart jokes and having the blind soldiers bump into objects is cheap laughs. I thought some of the other humour made fun of the fear that people had of this mysterious flu.

A tremendous outpouring of support over the past two weeks allowed us to meet and exceed our $30,000 fundraising goal, meaning we will also receive the full share of that matching grant. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all contributors! But here's a sobering thought: CounterPunch gets 70,000 visitors each day, but only 550 of you kicked in. It's not too late to support this website or buy a subscription to our newsletter, which contains fresh material you won't find anywhere else. The current issue features a startling report by economist Robert Pollin on peasant suicide rates in developing nations, such as India. And remember contributions are tax-deductible.
