Publications UPDATE Archive Winter 2000 Developments Deep Roots To honor the memory of her first husband, Barbara Kerr Stanley has established the Donald E. Kerr, Sr. and Barbara Kerr Stanley Fellowship to support graduate study in physics in the Krieger School's Department of Physics and Astronomy. The family's commitment to Hopkins and the School runs deep and has multiple roots. To start, Donald Kerr, Sr., a specialist in plasma physics, was an Arts and Sciences faculty member for nearly three decades starting in the late 1940s. Donald Kerr, Jr. '73 is an alumnus of the School. Barbara Kerr Stanley's second husband, Julian Stanley, founded Hopkins's highly esteemed Center for Talented Youth. Attesting to an earlier gift by the Kerr family to the Department of Physics and Astronomy, a conference room in the Bloomberg Center bears the Kerr name, as do a prize and medal awarded annually to an exceptionally talented undergraduate student. Now, department Chair Paul Feldman notes with particular appreciation, Barbara Kerr Stanley's recent gift, which was immediately augmented with Bloomberg funds, will fortify the department's efforts to recruit the most gifted graduate students in today's highly competitive environment. email this page Tim Kerr Men who stand 6’ 3" and weigh 230 pounds are not supposed to be lightening quick. Tim Kerr, however, was just that. He scored 54 or more goals four straight years and possibly could have achieved career totals among the highest in NHL history if weren’t for the injury bug that plagued him throughout his career. Even so, Kerr’s 363 career goals as a Flyer rank third on the team’s all-time list. During his first three years in the NHL, Kerr battled knee injuries and a broken leg more than defenseman and goaltenders. After scoring 54 career goals, Kerr equaled that number in 1983-84, his breakout season. Using his size, he entrenched himself in front of the net where he was as immovable as an incumbent politician. Fighting off the crosschecks, slashes, and claws of defenders, Kerr waited for his chance to pounce on a loose puck or sweep home a centering pass. Playing on a Mike Keenan coached team, however, allowed Kerr to become an all-around player. The hulking right wing was willing to listen, learn, and, most important, play defense. Lest anyone think his 1983-84 totals were a fluke, Kerr lit the lamp another 54 teams in 1984-85. His five hat tricks that season established a team record. Forty-four assists gave him a career-high 98 points. Kerr helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985, tallying ten goals and four assists for 14 points in 12 games. He set a playoff record on April 13, 1985, with four goals in one period as the Flyers beat the New York Rangers 6-5, sweeping the Patrick Division Semifinals in three games. Incredibly, the four goals came within an eight-minute time span. The Flyers lost the championship in five games to the Edmonton Oilers, with Kerr playing in just three because of injury.

Stan CornynKing of Liner Notes
L ike pulp fiction, liner notes may one day come to be appreciated as works of literature. And when they do, it's certain that Stan Cornyn will be viewed as the Jim Thompson of liner notes. He's already scored at least one scholarly article ("The Composition of Celebrity: Sinatra as Text in the Liner Notes of Stan Cornyn," Gilbert L. Gigliotti, in , Len Mustazza, Ed., Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers, 1998). While working for Warner Brothers and Reprise in the 1960s, Cornyn penned notes to a number of albums. To call them liner notes is stretching the conceptthese are more like fantastical riffs played out by a cat so far out there he's in a galaxy by himself. Cornyn actually won back-to-back Grammys in 1965 and 1966 for two Sinatra albums, September of My Years and Sinatra at the Sands . Cornyn was director of Creative Services at Warner as the 70s came in, and masterminded a number of ground-breaking marketing and packaging ventures, such as the Schlagers series of low-cost label samplers. He helped launch Randy Newman's career with the equivocal marketing line, "Once You Get Used to It, His Voice Really is Something." Cornyn went on to become a major player in the biz as the president of Warner New Media in the early 1990s, then ran Mediavision Multimedia Publishing, Inc. He now enjoys the good life in retirement in Santa Barbara and recently published a one-of-a-kind memoir of his time with Warner Brothers:

Kerr was the one honest starter employed by the White Sox in the scandalous 1919 World Series . He won his two starts against the Reds, one by shutout, while the corrupt star pitchers, Ed Cicotte and Lefty Williams , each dumped their first two assignments. Kerr was 21-9 in 1920 and, after the guilty players were purged, went 19-17 for the demoralized, seventh-place 1921 White Sox . Denied a $500 raise, he decided to pitch for independent teams rather than for tightfisted Charley Comiskey.

John Hallowell's description of Vintage A Team Race at the 2001 Australian Model Aircraft National Championships held at Albury/Wodonga. The Vintage A Team Race at Albury was one of the most anticipated races for a long time. Quite simply, it was an exercise to see who had the best version of the venerable Oliver Tiger. And to find out who could could get the most speed and laps from it. Would the winner come from the record holding Kerr / Rothwell specials, the specially prepared Olly replicas of engine guru Stan Pilgrim, or motors that have had the 'laying on of hands' by California engine whiz Tim Gillott? Time would provide an answer, although most likely a temporary one. The battle is only just beginning. Interstate rivalry is a great thing as it keeps everyone on their toes. Yet the spirit of co-operation between the states is alive and well. Like Andy Kerr helping out the gun team of Wilson / Ellins with specially prepared motors. It will be very interesting to see what Mark McDermott comes up with for Toowoomba. No one in this country has been practising as consistently fast as he has. He is capable of a couple of seconds for ten under what most were doing in Albury. And he gets close on 60 laps. In practice just before the event, Keith Baddock was goggle eyed when he counted Andy and Richard Justic doing 105 laps non-stop !!! Maybe it has something to do with the Hallowell / Baddock team's struggle to achieve a relatively modest 45 laps on a regular basis with their "Timmy Tiger"!
