J.E.B. Stuart's report of the
Battle of Brandy Station (Fleetwood)
Stuart was, for once, surprised when Federal cavalry under Alfred Pleasonton conducted a sudden, bold reconnaissance in force in June of 1863. The result was the largest cavalry battle to take place on the American continent. The Federals gave nearly as good as they got during the confused fighting, and drew off only when Confederate infantry began to arrive late in the day. The results of the whole affair were that Stuart was embarrassed by the incident, Rooney Lee was wounded, and the Union cavalry arm gained new confidence in its ability to cope with Rebel horsemen. ...Pleasonton's report of Brandy Station

Report of Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart, C. S. Army,
commanding cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia.
O.R. - SERIES I - VOLUME XXVII/2 [S# 44]
HEADQUARTERS CAVALRY DIVISION,
June 13, 1863.
GENERAL: I have the honor to submit the following report of the battle of Fleetwood, fought on the 9th instant: Soon after dawn on the morning of the 9th, sharp firing of small-arms was heard in the direction of Beverly Ford, indicating a crossing of the Rappahannock by the enemy. Brigadier-General Jones, whose pickets were at that ford, having heard the firing, notified me of it, and having first sent forward his grand guard, put the remainder of his command quickly in the saddle, and repaired to the support of his pickets. The Horse Artillery, encamped on the Beverly Ford road, was hastily hitched up and put in position, and orders were given to Brigadier-Generals Hampton and Robertson to move their brigades to the front, and to W. H. F. Lee, near Wellford's, to move his brigade toward Beverly, drawing toward him Fitz. Lee's brigade, commanded by Colonel [Thomas T.] Munford, each having a section of [James] Breathed's battery.

Developments in Legal Education:
Does Law School Cause Lawyer Misery?
Sara Kelley
Reference Librarian, Georgetown University Law Center
Note: This is the second entry in a continuing series about interesting developments in legal education. Each article will present a brief overview of a controversy or recent trend in the theory or practice of legal education. If you have ideas for future columns, or if you are interested in writing about a legal education development yourself, please contact Sara Kelley at sek28@law.georgetown.edu We often hear that depression and substance abuse are high among lawyers, while job satisfaction is low. Usually, this gloomy state of affairs is attributed to work-related stress, or to the pre-existing characteristics of persons typically attracted to the practice of law. But some legal academics and even psychologists have hypothesized that the process of legal education transforms the healthy college graduates who start law school into emotionally distressed lawyers. One study found that psychological distress symptoms such as depression, anxiety, hostility, and obsessive-compulsion increase dramatically during the first year of law school and do not decrease significantly during the second or third years, or in the two years following law school.
