John Kennedy On November 22, 1963, when he was hardly past his first thousand days in office, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was killed by an assassin's bullets as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was the youngest man elected President; he was the youngest to die. Of Irish descent, he was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. Graduating from Harvard in 1940, he entered the Navy. In 1943, when his PT boat was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer, Kennedy, despite grave injuries, led the survivors through perilous waters to safety. Back from the war, he became a Democratic Congressman from the Boston area, advancing in 1953 to the Senate. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. In 1955, while recuperating from a back operation, he wrote Profiles in Courage , which won the Pulitzer Prize in history.

John F Kennedy (1917 - 1963)
Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, into a wealthy family. Educated at Choate preparatory school and Harvard University, he graduated in 1940. Following naval service in the Pacific in World War Two, he entered politics in 1946 and won election as a Democrat to the US House of Representatives. Spurred on by his father, Joseph Kennedy, in 1952 John Kennedy was elected to the upper house of Congress, the Senate, defeating the incumbent Republican. Unsuccessful in gaining the 1956 Democratic vice-presidential nomination, Kennedy ran and won the party's presidential nomination four years later. His defeat of vice-president Richard Nixon in the subsequent election made him the nation's first Roman Catholic head of state. He was also, at the age of 43, the youngest president ever elected. His presidency got off to an uncertain start, despite the promise in his inaugural address of January 1961 that the US would 'pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend [and] oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of liberty ...'. Subsequently, his years in power were marked by several areas of tension in foreign affairs, together with a rhetorical commitment to introducing domestic reforms, and most of all to expanding the civil rights of black Americans.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy May 29 November 22 ), often referred to as Jack Kennedy or JFK , was the 35th President of the United States Considered the icon of American Liberalism , his assassination on November 22 is often considered a defining moment of 20th century American history in its traumatic impact on the entire nation, and his elevation as an icon for a new generation of Americans and American aspirations. The youngest person ever to be elected President of the U.S., at the age of 43 ( Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest ever to serve as president), Kennedy also died the youngest of any American President — at 46 years and 177 days. He is also the only Roman Catholic ever to be elected President, the last Democratic Party candidate from a Northern state to be elected President, the first President to serve who was born in the 20th century , the last President elected who was a U.S. Senator immediately before becoming President, and the last President to die in office.

Biography
Quote John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th 1917 at Brookline (Massachusetts). His father Joseph Kennedy was an ambitious politician, who became from son of a pubkeeper to a millionaire. He married the daughter of the mayor of Boston, Rose Fitzgerald. John F. was their second son. During World War II their oldest son lost his life, when his airplane exploded above the Canal. Kennedy studied at Harvard and after he had finished, he also had to serve in the war. As lieutenant of the PT 109 he once was shipwrecked, but he survived and because of his heroism he saved the lives of his crew. In 1952 he became senator of Massachusetts. In 1956 he almost became running mate of Adlai Stevenson, but lost to Estes Kefauver of Tennessee: anyway, they lost the elections. In 1958 he won reelection in Massachusetts by 875,000 votes, the largest majority in the state's history. He was elected for president in November 1960, after a less than easy election contest. He defeated Richard Nixon and became the youngest (43) to be elected to the White House in American history 'till then. In contrast to Al Smith in 1928 (first Catholic presidential candidate) Kennedy was elected despite of being Catholic.

In 1955, while recuperating from a back operation, he wrote "Profiles in Courage," and won the Pulitzer Prize in history. In 1960 Kennedy gained the Democratic Party's nomination for President. Millions watched his television debates with the Republican candidate, Richard M. Nixon. Winning by a narrow margin in the popular vote, Kennedy became the youngest man elected President, and the first Roman Catholic. President Kennedy's economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II. He also took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation. Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a group of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro. The invasion was a failure. In 1962 the Russians began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered in October of 1962, Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. With the world on the brink of nuclear war, the Russians backed down and agreed to remove the missiles. Kennedy asserted that both the Russians and Americans had a vital interest in stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the arms race. To this end his administration negotiated the test ban treaty of 1963.

In contrast to the grey establishment figures of the Eisenhower years, John F Kennedy represented everything the USA of 1960 aspired to: youth, vigour, dynamism and a sense that the American dream was in reach again. However, the image was a sham: Kennedy was concealing a secret which could prevent him from becoming president. Another serious condition plagued Kennedy. Born with one leg shorter than the other, he suffered from chronic back pain which required rocking chairs and heating devices, but most importantly injections of powerful painkilling drugs. Max Jacobsen a.k.a. Doctor Feelgood began to supply JFK with amphetamines (speed) which he claimed were vitamins, hormones and enzymes.

In 1940, Kennedy graduated from Harvard University cum laude. A year later he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1943, he became a war hero when he helped save the lives of the men on the boat he commanded, PT 109, when they were torpedoed by a Japanese destroyer. With his back reinjured, he managed to swim with his surviving men to an island three miles away and eventually they were rescued five days later.
Kennedy ran for Congress for the Boston district and was reelected twice. He then ran for United States Senator and won against a tough fight against Republican Henry Cabot Lodge. In 1956, he was just barely defeated for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Two years later he was reelected to the U.S. Senate.
In 1960 he ran for President of the United States against then Vice-President, Richard M. Nixon. At age 43, Kennedy became the youngest elected President of the United States, winning by less than one percent of the popular vote.
