KENNEDY, JOHN F.
, thirty-fifth president of the United States. Kennedy was born into an Irish-American family with aspirations resembling those of the British gentry. Overcoming limitations of health and doubts about his personal ambitions, he achieved the presidency by battling simultaneously on several fronts. Kennedy coasted to the inevitable first-ballot nomination at the Democratic party's Los Angeles convention in July 1960 and then pulled off what proved to be an essential political coup by selecting Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas as his running mate. Kennedy's electoral college margin of 303-219 was won with little more than a 100,000-vote plurality out of nearly 69 million cast. At the age of forty-three, he became the youngest man to reach the White House via the electoral college. Most significant was his ability to demonstrate that a Roman Catholic could win. The second Kennedy legacy, more arguable and tentative, involved the contention that his objectives were myopic to begin with, and that he encouraged inflated expectations, both at home and abroad. His misguided effort to topple Fidel Castro's Cuban regime during the Bay of Pigs fiasco triggered a chain of events that helped lead to the later showdown over Russian missiles in Cuba. His continuation of the American commitment to the South Vietnamese government of President Ngo Dinh Diem intensified the escalation in Southeast Asia. That policy became virtually irreversible when Kennedy became an accomplice in Diem's subsequent overthrow. Those who had expected a more activist presidency found him too timid about pressuring the still-powerful congressional conservatives. Fear of political retribution inhibited requests for additional civil rights legislation until violent resistance to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, desegregation efforts removed his options.

by Robert Dallek
Publisher: Little, Brown, 2003 Reviewed by: Kevin Quinn In "An Unfinished Life," Robert Dallek gives a strong and balanced assessment of the life and times of JFK. An appropriate title, coined by Dallek's wife, provides some notable differences from the hundreds of other biographies and evaluations. The generational timeliness and Dallek's analysis of new medical material provide insights not covered in previous works. Dallek invented an unusual method to put JFK's life in perspective. He asked his two children and a son in law to provide a generational perspective to the nation's 35th president with the goal of providing an "understand[ing] [of] what young people born in the years after 1963 need to learn about JFK if his life and times are to have special meaning to them." Not surprisingly, the younger generation wonders what JFK was like, why he was so popular and what he actually accomplished. With insights from his son, daughter and son-in-law, Dallek provides an updated generational perspective on JFK's leadership. Further contributing to the value of Dallek's study was his access to medical records not released until 2002. These provide extraordinary information on just how ill JFK was both before he became president and after.

Robert Dallek's epic biography, AN UNFINISHED LIFE: John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963, portrays the life of the 35th president of the United States in award-winning fashion.
Dallek, a professor at Boston University, spent five years of extensive research to produce this tremendous biography. Not only did Dallek unearth Kennedy's own tryst with a White House intern (which recently made national headlines), he also reveals Kennedy's use of numerous prescription drugs during his turbulent life to battle the multitude of inflictions that ravished his body since early childhood.
While it isn't breaking news today, Dallek also presents the fact that Kennedy, like his father, delved deep into adultery. Dallek concludes that Kennedy's numerous affairs could be blamed on his mother Rose's inept upbringing of their second of nine children. Dallek makes several references to Kennedy's torrid appetite for sex and its correlation with a neglectful mother, with which I tend to disagree.
JFK lived a pampered life - before and after his service in the US Navy during World War II - as the member of a prominent Boston family. Extremely good looking, Kennedy was the quintessential playboy and, as Dallek shows, used his power in politics before and during his presidency to attract his female suitors.

Preface
I have also tried to judiciously assess the negative and positive family influences on his character, the record of his navy service, his House and Senate careers, and, most important, his presidential policies on the economy, civil rights, federal aid to education, health insurance for seniors, and poverty, and, even more consequentially, on dealings with Russia, nuclear weapons, space, Cuba, and Vietnam. I have not hesitated to say what I believe Kennedy might have done about the many ongoing problems certain to have faced him in a second term, however open to question these conclusions may be. "It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it," said Joseph Joubert, a French philosopher of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
I believe this biography provides the most authoritative discussion to date on Kennedy the man and his political career. Nonetheless, however much it may be a significant advance in understanding, I have no illusion that I am recording the last word on John F. Kennedy. The economist Thorstein Veblen was surely right when he cautioned that "the outcome of any serious research can only be to make two questions grow where one question grew before." Add to this the man's almost mythical importance to Americans and hundreds of millions of people around the globe and you can be certain that future generations will be eager for renewed attention to him in the context of their own times.

John F. Kennedy, 1960 Life of Pain
John F. Kennedy, known as Jack, lived his life in pain. He had chronic back problems that were exacerbated by his physical competitiveness, and Addison's disease, a hormonal disorder that causes fatigue and compromises the immune system. He was given last rites, the Catholic blessing before death, three times before he reached the age of forty: in 1947 after he returned, gravely ill, from England; in 1951 while running a high fever in Japan; and following back surgery in 1954. According to historian Robert Dallek, if the public had known about Kennedy's ill health, he probably never would have been elected president. School and Navy
Like his father and brother before him, Jack went to Harvard where he befriended many peers and professors. His undergraduate thesis on Great Britain's lack of preparedness for the Nazi advance was published as Why England Slept (1940). Upon graduating, Jack joined the Navy, and was sent to the Naval Intelligence division in Washington. After agitating for a more active role, Kennedy was assigned command of a patrol boat in the Pacific, PT-109.

JOHN F. KENNEDY QUOTES
by Mark Lugris
Undoubtedly the most beloved President of our time, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is remembered mostly through his words. Our collection of John F. Kennedy quotes celebrates the ideas and insights of our 35 th President. Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, JFK was the second oldest of the Kennedys' nine children. A deeply competitive child, JFK excelled in English and History at Choate, the boarding school he attended. "For of those to whom much is given, much is required" John Fitzgerald Kennedy quotes (American 35th US president (1961-63), 1917-1963) Add to my book show_bar(167510,null,'for_of_those_to_whom_much_is_given-much_is') In 1936, JFK enrolled at Harvard with his older brother Joe. Although Joe was considered more likely to succeed in family circles, Jack surprised everyone when he took a strong interest in politics and world affairs after his father was named ambassador to England. "Domestic policy can only defeat us; foreign policy can kill us"

Kennedy, 1917-1963 by author Robert Dallek This book combines in one volume all the most pertinent facts about the life and political career of the 35th President of the United States, presented in a seamless and well-written, (although somewhat stylistically stuffy) narrative.
True to his reputation for fairness and objectivity, Robert Dallek scrupulously avoids attempting to create new controversies about JFK; at the same time, he doesn't shy away from making negative judgments about Kennedy's decisions and actions when he feels those judgments are warranted.
Dallek includes all the major high and low points of Kennedy's Presidency: his failed attempt to oust Fidel Castro from Cuba with the disastrous Bay of Pigs operation; his amateurish confrontation with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev at Vienna in 1961; his growing apprehension over the U.S. role in Vietnam; his overly cautious, halting support of civil rights legislation; his insistence on large tax cuts to stimulate a sluggish American economy (presaging a similar argument by another President 40 years later); his ultimately successful confrontation with the Soviet Union over missiles in Cuba, where he and Khrushchev brought the world within a hair's breadth of nuclear war in October 1962; and a host of other Presidential actions and decisions that showed Kennedy to be at once foolhardy and wise; rational and impetuous, idealistic and the master of realpolitik.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was one of America's most charismatic and popular presidents. His heroism during World War II has been well documented. His leadership and no-blink courage during the Cuban Missile Crisis — with World War III in the balance — ensures his place among world leaders of the ages. Kennedy's peccadillos outside the Oval Office, though, were met by the American public with a few giggles and a collective blush. The tragic end to the JFK era in Dallas on November 22, 1963, ripped the heart out of American innocence and stunned the world into recognizing the cataclysmic social and political changes that were occurring in every corner of the globe. The early years Born in May 1917, John was the second child of Joseph and Rose. Known in his Irish Catholic neighborhood as "Jack," he was a sickly child, having suffered from whooping cough, scarlet fever, and other maladies. After taking a turn for the better, his family could easily joke that if a mosquito were to bite him, it would be the insect's life that would be in danger. Jack would be part of a nine-children household with older brother Joseph Jr., younger sisters Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, and Patricia, brother Robert, sister Jean, and youngest brother Edward, better known as Teddy.

Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (1917-1963)
John F. Kennedy was born 29 May 1917 to a politically prominent, wealthy Boston family. As a child, Kennedy enjoyed the privileges of an elite education, eventually graduating from Harvard University in 1938. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Kennedy followed his father's entry into politics. Following three terms in the House of Representatives, Kennedy won a Senate seat in 1952. Kennedy remained in the Senate for eight years and in 1960, secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president. The 1960 presidential campaign, which pitted Kennedy against Richard Nixon, proved to be one of the closest elections in U.S. history, one in which Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement played a pivotal role. After King's 1960 arrest in Georgia, Kennedyfollowing the recommendations of campaign advisorscalled Coretta King to offer his support and used his influence to secure King's release from Reidsville Prison. As a result, Kennedy garnered a large amount of support from the black community. While King chose to remain publicly impartial, he privately voiced support for Kennedy. On election day, Kennedy defeated Nixon by less than 1% of the popular vote, a margin of victory that highlighted the importance of African-American support. Immediately after his election, Kennedy proceeded cautiously with respect to civil rights. Despite pleas from King and other civil rights leaders for federal intervention during the controversy surrounding the

John F. Kennedy
Thirty-fifth President (1961-1963)
When an assassin's bullet cut short John Kennedy's presidency in November 1963, the country experienced a collective sense of loss that it had not known since the death of Lincoln. But the grief was not so much inspired by a long litany of presidential accomplishments as it was an expression of what Kennedy had come to represent. To be sure, his administration could claim notable triumphs in foreign policy, including its successful face-off with the Soviets over the presence of missiles in Cuba. Its support for the civil rights movement had, moreover, contributed significantly to a climate that would soon give birth to landmark legislation promoting racial equality. The main source of grief over Kennedy's death, however, was the eloquence and idealism that he had brought to his presidency and that made him, in the eyes of many, the embodiment of this country's finest aspirations. Based on an oil sketch for which John F. Kennedy posed in 1962, this portrait underscores the youthful vitality that was such an important part of Kennedy's charisma. But his health was never as robust as it seemed. Among his recurring ailments were back difficulties that were the source of frequent and severe pain.

When artist Elaine de Kooning arranged for sittings with Kennedy in late 1962, she intended to complete a single portrait, destined for the Harry S. Truman Library. But, fascinated with the changeability of Kennedy's features, she instead painted an entire series of likenesses, including the full-length image here. In its loose, almost chaotic brushwork, the portrait bears witness to de Kooning's close identification with the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s.

John F. Kennedy
