The pattern of Thomas's life remained the same over the years. He devoted his time to prayer, study, copying manuscripts, teaching novices, offering Mass, and hearing the confessions of people who came to the monastery church. From time to time Thomas was given a position of authority in the community of monks, but he consistently preferred the quiet of his cell to the challenge of administration. He was pleasant but retiring. The other monks eventually recognized Thomas's talent for deep thought and stopped troubling him with practical affairs. Thomas wrote a number of sermons, letters, hymns, and lives of the saints. He reflected the mystical spirituality of his times, the sense of being absorbed in God. The most famous of his works by far is

Thomas a Kempis later would write the biographies of GERARD GROOTE and of his successor, Floris Radewyns. Thomas a Kempis joined the Brethren of the Common Life. He wrote, together with others, the IMITATIO CHRISTI, which, because of Thomas' signature, is attributed to him.

[ No introduction written yet. ] Thomas à Kempis. The Imitation of Christ. Selections.
"The kingdom of God is within you," says the Lord.
Turn yourself with your whole heart to the Lord, and forsake this wretched world, and your heart will find rest.
Learn to despise outward things and to give yourself to things within, and you will see the kingdom of God coming within you.
For the kingdom of God is peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, which is not given to the wicked.
Christ will come to you and will show you this consolation, if you prepare for Him a worthy mansion within you.
All His glory and beauty is from within, and there is His delight.
He frequently visits the inner man; sweet discourse, pleasant solace, much peace, familiarity exceedingly wonderful.
Go, faithful soul, make ready your heart for this bridegroom, that He may vouchsafe to come to you and dwell in you.

IMITATION OF CHRIST
IMITATION OF CHRIST, THE (Imitatio Cliristi), the title of a famous medieval Christian devotional work, much used still by both Catholics and Protestants and usually ascribed to Thomas a Kempis. The Contestation over the author of the Imitation of Christ is probably the most considerable and famous controversy that has ever been carried on concerning a purely literary question. It has been going on almost without flagging for three centuries, and nearly 200 combatants have entered the lists. In the present article nothing is said on the history of the controversy, but an attempt is made to summarize the results that may be looked on as definitely acquired. Until quite recently there were three candidates in the field Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471), a canon regular of Mount St Agnes in Zwolle, in the diocese of Utrecht, of the Windesheirn Congregation of Augustinian Canons; John Gerson (f 363I479), chancellor of the University of Paris; and an abbot, John Gersen, said to have been abbot of a Benedictine monastery at Vercelli in the 12th century. Towards the end of the 15th century the Imitation circulated under the names of the first two; but Gerson is an impossible author, and his claims have never found defenders except in France, where they are no longer urged. The Benedictine abbot Gersen is an absolutely mythical personage, a mere double of the chancellor. Consequently at the present day the question is narrowed to the issue: Thomas a Kempis, or an unknown author.
