BellaOnline's Deafness Editor Helen Keller (1880 - 1968) Helen Adams Keller was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. When only 19 months old she was hit with a disease which left her blind and deaf. It is not known what the disease was - perhaps scarlet fever. She was in essence shut off from the world she had known, and her reaction was frustration and rage. An extremely intelligent child, her parents did not know how to deal with this and she ran wild until they brought on Anne Sullivan
Anne had been blind herself, but medical procedures had allowed her her vision back. Anne worked patiently and painstakingly with Anne, teaching her sign language by forming the letters in Helen´s hand. Helen learned to parrot the symbols back, but had no idea what they stood for. Then, on 5 April 1887, Helen was standing with her hand in flowing water, and Anne repeatedly signed "water water water" in her hand, as she had done many other days. Suddenly the light clicked in Helen´s mind - these symbols MEANT the wet substance touching her hand! She was joyful and amazed - she had a way to communicate about things around her, and to interact with people. She ran around, signing words and asking what other items were. It was the opening of an entirely new life for her. She went on to earn her bachelor´s degree at Radcliff college, with honors, in a day where many women did not attend college, wrote poetry, and wrote an autobiography. She was an outspoken socialist and supported the NAACP and ACLU. She helped lobby with the government for more services for blind and deaf people.

Former USDA official Eileen Kennedy named ILSI Global Executive Director CONGRATULATIONS EILEEN! Ed. BACK TO TOP ILSI president Dr. Jim Stanley is pleased to announce that Dr. Eileen Kennedy will become the new ILSI Global Executive Director beginning March 18, 2002. In announcing the appointment, Dr. Stanley cited Dr. Kennedy's many qualifications, among them her grasp of the scientific issues of interest to ILSI, strong managerial skills, and international experience with nutrition and food security. In accepting the position, Dr. Kennedy said, "These are exciting times. So much of what ILSI is doing is addressing the worldwide agenda on biotechnology, nutrition, and food safety. ILSI's network of branches and its work with global organizations like FAO and WHO are well respected. Quotes of the Day for 27 June 2003 - Helen Keller

Helen Adams Keller was born at Tuscumbia, Alabama on this day in 1880. She was a bright and attractive child until she fell sick at 19 months with "brain fever," now believed to have been meningitis. For days she was expected to die, but after recovering she had lost all vision and hearing. Over the next few years her temper made her almost impossible to live with. With the full-time help of Anne Sullivan, Helen learned to communicate several different ways, and as her world opened up again her manners improved. By age eight she was a celebrity, when she graduated from Radcliffe in 1904 she was the first deaf and blind person to acquire a bachelors degree. She spent the rest of her life raising funds and consciousness for the improvement of the blind. We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world. It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.
