Helen Keller
Helen Keller (1880-1968) was born in northwest Alabama, with full sight and hearing. At nineteen months she suffered a mysterious illness that left her both blind and deaf and interrupted her speech development. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1904, the first deaf-blind person to attend an institution of higher learning. In subsequent years, Helen Keller joined the Socialist Party and embarked on a career as a public lecturer. She has written several books, including The Story of My Life and Teacher and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.

Blind-deaf women-United States-Biography-Juvenile literature. Grades 3-6 /Ages 8-11. Review by Linda Ludke. excerpt:
Almost as soon as Annie met Helen, she began spelling words into the little girl's hands using the one-hand manual alphabet. Helen copied the shapes back to Annie, but they meant nothing to her. Still, Helen's ability to repeat the letters so easily showed how smart she was. The pages are enhanced with photographs, memorabilia and sign language examples. Small pen and ink caricature sketches with dialogue bubbles further engage the reader. At the end of the book, a timeline is included. Students will find "Helen's life at a glance" to be a useful summary. A sidebar, entitled "Visit Helen," provides details on three tourist sites: Helen's birthplace, Ivy Green in Tuscumbia, Alabama; Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck, Nova Scotia; and Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts. However, no specific addresses are given, nor any contact information. This is a well researched, clearly written biography that will be a welcome addition to school and public library collections.

HELEN KELLER
Social Activist and Visionary
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched.
They must be felt with the heart."
At the tender age of 19 months, Helen Keller suffered an illness that left her profoundly deaf and blind. She overcame these disabilities with the assistance of a devoted teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen how to read and write in Braille. She would later learn to speak in a primitive fashion. After graduation from Radcliffe College in 1904, Keller devoted herself to a range of social causes. Between 1909 and 1924, she was active in the radical politics of the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World. She also campaigned against U.S. entry into World War I and in favor of women's suffrage. Beginning in 1924, however, Keller was an articulate spokesman for the American Foundation for the Blind and a national symbol of personal courage in the face of adversity. Her many books and William Gibson's popular play, The Miracle Worker helped to convince the American people that physical limitations need not compromise a person's intellectual potential.

Anne's jeugd
Op 7 oktober 1880 werd Anne toegelaten tot "Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind" in Boston.

She spent her life raising money for the blind and other social causes especially working for The American Foundation for the Blind. In this early letter (she had graduated from Radcliffe in 1904) she announces that Dr. Henry van Dyke as National Chairman of the American Foundation for the Blind is "endeavoring to secure an Endowment Fund." She informs Mr. DeLaitre that she will be visiting his city soon to speak at "one or two meetings" and expresses a desire to meet him. Helen Keller Quotes
Keep your face to the sunshine and you can never see the shadow. I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. I believe in immortality of the soul because I have within me immortal longings. When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. College isn't the place to go for ideas. I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do. The world is full of suffering, but it is also full of the overcoming of it. One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar. Sure, the world is full of trouble. But, as long as we have people undoing trouble, we have a pretty good world. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

Helen Keller (1880-1968) American Blind/Deaf Author, Lecturer, Amorist
One can never consent to creep when one feels the impulse to soar.
When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the one that has opened for us.
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
Life is either a daring adventure, or it is nothing at all.
Four things to learn in life: To think clearly without hurry or confusion; To love everybody sincerely; To act in everything with the highest motives; To trust God unhesitatingly.
Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. It's what sunflowers do.
Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
