Review
A Saint at Oxford
By Christopher Ricks John Keble by Georgina Battiscombe Knopf, 395 pp., $8.50 This is apparently the first full-length life of John Keble (1792-1866), but there is nothing to be surprised at in the placid patience of the years. Of the dignitaries of the Oxford Movement, Keble was the dullest, lacking either the sharpness of intellect of Newman or the stubborn hardihood of Pusey. The Movement itself now has a tinge of the tragicomic. Determined to restore to a dusty Church of England the color, traditions, and authority of a "Catholic Church," the worthies watched with pained bemusement as one by one their supporters decided that if you really wanted the virtues of a Catholic Church, you have to seek them in the Roman Catholic Church. There is a tellingly compact account of Keble in Sir Geoffrey Faber's classic study, Oxford Apostles The Christian Year (1827). And the first fine careless rapture of the Tracts for the Times , their aspiration that the Church of England could be protected against all its encircling enemies: Romish beguilements, Low Church aridity, Broad Church liberalism (i.e. impiety). Then the shock of Newman's remorseless strictness with himself, ending in his departure. And so into a series of tarnished controversies: the Gorham case (he being unsound on baptismal regeneration), the Colenso case (he doubting the literal accuracy of the Pentateuch).

      • Undergraduate Admissions One of the intentions behind the foundation of Keble (the name commemorates John Keble, 1792-1866, poet, priest and leader of the Oxford Movement) was to make an Oxford education more widely accessible. The college retains this aim. We accept about 130 undergraduates annually from all types of school and social background. Keble encourages applications from schools that do not regularly send candidates to Oxford.
        Location
Keble College is at the corner of Keble Road and Parks Road, just across from the Science Area, Radcliffe Science Library and the University Parks, while other facilities, such as the Maths Institute, Pitt Rivers Museum, Computing Service and Language Centre, are close by.
        Accommodation and meals
Keble can normally offer all undergraduates accommodation for their first two years and most who are in their third or final year. Students in their final year do not have to move out during the vacations, minimising disruption in the run-up to final examinations. Our 360 rooms are centrally heated and well furnished. Some 250 have en-suite facilities; the remainder have their own washbasins with adjacent toilets and shower rooms. Some second or third years are accommodated in nearby houses. Ramps, a flat front entrance to the college and a lift to Hall provide essential access for wheelchair disabled students. Candidates with other disabilities should not be deterred from applying. The college retains the custom of dining formally in Hall with waiter service each night except Saturday. All other meals are self service. At breakfast and lunch the items are charged individually. The college provides a selection of vegetarian dishes and caters for special

Music Notes: July 14, 2002 Commemoration of the Oxford Movement
On the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
"On 14th July 1833, Mr. Keble preached the assize sermon in the University Pulpit. It was published under the title of National Apostasy . I have ever considered and kept the day as the start of the religious movement of 1833." Thus wrote John Henry Newman (1801-90) in his autobiographical Apologia The day is well worth considering and keeping, for the "religious movement of 1833", which came to be known as the Oxford Movement, though often controversial and divisive, profoundly influenced Anglican religious life. The Church of the Transfiguration has from its beginnings been steeped in the ideals of the Oxford Movement, making this church a particularly appropriate place to continue Newman's custom of observing July 14th. The hymns at today's service are an integral part of our commemoration. The hymn was greatly reinvigorated in the 19th century, having suffered considerable neglect in the preceding centuries. Thus, hymns were an important component of the Oxford Movement, and two of its founders and principal exponents, John Keble (1792-1866) and John Henry Newman, were gifted writers of hymn texts.
