Project Canterbury History of the Church of the Ascension, Chicago, Illinois 1857-1982 By George C. Giles, Jr. Aberdeen, South Dakota: North Plains Press, 1984. Introduction: The Oxford Movement and the Midwest The Oxford Movement, which began some 150 years ago, was a cry for religious renewal within the Church of England. It was in large part a Catholic revival, a convincing effort to link the Church of Thomas Cranmer, Matthew Parker, and Richard Hooker with the Holy Catholic Church that had been founded by Jesus Christ and had served as the vessel of truth over the centuries. As W. J. Sparrow Simpson observed, "The Movement has inspired new life in a dying Church. It has restored the Catholic tradition into a communion in which it was almost lost." The Oxford Movement was also a plea by inspired men and women for personal holiness, love, and discipline. Born of the Romantic Era, it was, wrote Owen Chadwick, "an impulse of the heart and the conscience, not an inquiry of the head." It was "a movement of pastoral and moral care." By 1833 the Church of England seemed to be approaching extinction. For one thing, the Industrial Revolution had reduced villages to tiny hamlets, and little provision had been made for the construction of new churches in the teeming cities. While the growing population shifted toward the urban and industrial centers of the Midlands and the North, the Church did not follow. Alan D. Gilbert has noted, "it is certain that in an expanding society Anglicanism had lost touch, as a religious institution, with very large sections of the population."

    The line of yellow light dies fast away
    Falls on the moor the brief November day. Now the tired hunter winds a parting note,
    And Echo bids good-night from every glade;
    Yet wait awhile and see the calm leaves float
    Each to his rest beneath their parent shade. How like decaying life they seem to glide
    And yet no second spring have they in store;
    And where they fall, forgotten to abide
    Is all their portion, and they ask no more.
    A thousand wild-flowers round them shall unfold,
    The green buds glisten in the dews of Spring,
    And all be vernal rapture as of old. Unconscious they in waste oblivion lie, In all the world of busy life around No drop, for them, of kindly influence found. Yet he complains, while these unmurmuring part With their sweet lives, as pure from sin and stain As his when Eden held his virgin heart. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

    John Keble John Keble was born at Fairford, Gloucestershire in 1792, and he died at Bournemouth, Hampshire in 1866. Keble was educated by his father, a clergyman and at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He became a fellow of Oriel, which at that time was the foremost college in Oxford. In 1816 Keble was ordained in the Anglican Church. For ten years, 1831-1841, he held the lectureship on poetry at Oxford University. Keble's reputation grew on his contribution to religious poetry and his position on sacramentarian views in the Church of England and, of course in the development of the Oxford Movement, together with Newman and Pusey Newman offered his first theological work The Arians of the Fourth Centuryto Keble; originally the dedication read as follows:

    John Mason Neale
    John Mason Neale, an eminent English clergyman and author, the son of Rev. Cornelius Neale, was born in London on Conduit Street January 24, 1818. His father died when he was five years old. As a boy of fourteen, he began a translation (published in 1833-34) of the poetical writings of Coelius Sedulius, who flourished about 450 AD, and was counted among the founders of Christian hymnody. Here are two significant lines from one of his compositions Great things are they I ask, Thou giv'st great things;
    And more he angers Thee, who trifles craves. As a student books were his passion; he read at meals, read walking, read driving, read everything that came to hand, and what he read he never forgot. Simeon was still alive when Neale entered Cambridge, and he used to attend his sermons, feeling profound reverence for the great evangelical divine, though the bent of his own mind was already set towards another school. When Simeon was on his deathbed, Neale wrote in his journal, "I do think at this moment Mr. Simeon must be the happiest man in the world." And then when the end had come, "What a meeting he and Henry Martyn must have had." Martyn was one of a generation of ministers greatly influenced by Simeon, and died bringing the Gospel to Persia. He was educated at Shelbourne Grammar school and by private tutors before he entered Trinity College in Cambridge in 1836.
