That if Poetry comes not as naturally as the Leaves to a tree it had better not come at all."

John Keats
Short Biography Birth
John Keats was born in Moorfields, London. His father, Thomas, worked in the Swan and Hoop Inn and Stables owned by his wife Frances’ father (Keats’ maternal grandfather). Early life and education
He attended a Dame school as an infant, moving to a school in Enfield in 1803 (8) whose headmaster, John Clarke , taught in the tradition of the dissenting academies. In 1804 (9) his father died after a fall from a horse. Two months later his mother married William Rawlings of Moorgate, who was a stable keeper. Her father (Keats’ maternal grandfather) died in 1805 (10), and a bitter dispute with her brother (Keats’ uncle) followed regarding the will. In the summer of 1805 (10) Frances and Rawlings filed a legal petition against her brother, her mother and the second executor of her father’s will. His mother’s new marriage collapsed, however, and she disappeared, leaving her 69 year old mother Alice (Keats’ grandmother) to take responsibility for her children. When Keats’ mother returned in 1809 (14), she was already ill, and Keats tended her and read to her until she died in 1810 (15). She left Keats’ finances under the control of Richard Abbey, a prosperous partner in a firm of tea brokers. Apprenticeship
Keats was apprenticed to an apothecary, Thomas Hammond, but continued to visit

What men or gods are these? What maidens loth? What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape? What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy? Keats' father died in 1804 and his mother in 1810, but he did not live with her after the age of 10 (he was apprenticed to an apothecary), but rather with his grandmother, when he was not at boarding school. Very soon after his father died his mother remarried, but it was a disaster and she and the children ran away from her new husband. Their grandmother took custody of the children, and Keats' mother did not reappear until 1809. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? He grew up to become one of the greatest poets of the English language, even though he died very young.

This website is dedicated to the life and work of the great Romantic poet, John Keats. Born in 1795, Keats published three books of poetry in his lifetime but was dismissed as a middle-class interloper by most critics. He had no advantages of birth, wealth or education; he lost his parents in childhood, watched one brother die of tuberculosis and the other emigrate to America. Poverty kept him from marrying the woman he loved. And he achieved lasting fame only after his early death in 1821. Yet grief and hardship never destroyed his passionate commitment to poetry. Reading Keats is a luxury, a rare chance to experience the English language as a work of art. Whether you are new to his work or a dedicated admirer, I hope you will enjoy visiting this website.

    John Keats - Biography
View: Poetry of Keats KEATS, JOHN (1795-1821) He was sent to a school at Enfield, and having meanwhile become an orphan, was in 1810 apprenticed to a surgeon at Edmonton. In 1815 he went to London to work in different hospitals. However he was not at all enthusiastic in this profession. Instead he became immersed in literature, meeting like minded poets such as Shelley William Wordsworth and others. His first work some sonnets appeared in Hunt's “Examiner”, and his first book, “Poems”, came out in 1817. This book, while containing much that gave little promise of what was to come, was not without touches of beauty and music, but it fell quite flat, finding few readers beyond his immediate circle. His next work “Endymion” appeared in 1818 but received harsh criticism from leading magazines.
