33. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce irischer Schriftsteller. Jahrhunderts. Joyce wurde am 2. Februar 1882 in Dublin geboren.

I. Joyce, James Augustine
(From the Online Biographical Encyclopedia A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
He grew up a rebel among rebels. Those movements, whether political or literary, which had as their objective the freeing of Ireland from English dominance, held very little attraction for him. His instinct was for a broader European culture, and to this an exceptional faculty for linguistic study gave him precocious access. Among companions who were picking up a little Gaelic and were enthusiastic for the theater of Yeats, Synge, and Lady Gregory, Joyce stdied Dano-Norwegian and opposed to the Celtic twilight the hard, clear illumination of Ibsen in his realistic phase.
In a city much given to artistic coteries he remained aloof and even arrogant. For a time he led, or claimed to lead, a life of more than common adolescent irregularity; his early fugitive productions were often improper or scandalous. A powerful and original intellect made him quickly intolerant of the narrow curriculum of his college and of the strict Roman Catholic orthodoxy by which it was controlled.

James Joyce
Novelist Writing in English is the most ingenious torture

James Joyce
was born on February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. His subtle yet frank portrayal of human nature, coupled with his mastery of language made him one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century. Joyce is best known for his experimental use of language and his exploration of new literary methods. His use of the literary technique, "stream-of-consciousness" reveals the flow of impressions, half thoughts, associations, hesitations, impulses, as well as the rational thoughts of his characters. The main strength of his masterpiece novel, "Ulysses" (1922) lies in the depth of character portrayed using this technique. Joyce's other major works include "Dubliners," a collection of short stories that portray his native city, a semi-autobiographical novel called "A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man" (1916), and "Finnegans Wake" (1939), an experimental novel that first appeared in the form of extracts from 1928 to 1937 as "Work in Progress." Joyce faced daunting financial and health problems while at work on "Ulysses." Between 1917 and 1930 he endured a series of 25 operations for eye diseases. Despite these problems he continued to work. He was helped by a large grant from Edith Rockefeller McCormick, and by a series of grants from Harriet Shaw Weaver, which by 1930 had amounted to more than 23,000. The generosity of these patrons resulted from their admiration of his work, and their sympathy with his difficulties.

Synopsis
Although James Joyce left Ireland as a young man and spent most of his adult life on the European continent, all his books have Ireland as their geographic center. When asked near the end of his life if he ever intended to return to Ireland, Joyce responded candidly, "Have I ever left it?"
In the fifteen classic stories that comprise Dubliners, James Joyce seeks to explore the "significance of trivial things." While the stories can be regarded as separate and independent entities, they can also be considered as parts of a larger whole, reinforcing and illuminating each other, acting as pieces of a mosaic that captures moods from childhood, young adulthood, courtship, and married life, as well as the public life of church, state, and the arts. Included in the collection is The Dead," Joyce's most enduring and evocative piece of short fiction, together with the often anthologized Araby, Eveline, and A Painful Case.
