88. Who Is Samantha Smith Allen?
edited with an introduction by Jane Curry, (University of Illinois Press,1983); Marietta Holley Life with Josiah Allen s wife, by Kate Winter,
http://www.usfamily.net/web/dllund/jac/sam3.htm
    Who is Samantha Smith Allen?
  • Marietta Holley's literary creation, Samantha Smith Allen, was a philosopher of sound country stock whose ideas on various issues are grounded in an affection for common sense and faith in its applicability to problems. Through her 19th century brand of horse sense American humor, she challenges the status quo of social norms regarding women's issues and plants herself squarely on the side of sensible women's rights. She "rastles" with questions concerning history's treatment of women, rights denied by the church, women's powerlessness before the law, social status, role assumptions, and more. Samantha appeared in more than twenty books written by Holley between 1873 and 1914, among them My Opinions and Betsey Bobbet's Samantha at the World's Fair Samantha Among the Brethren Samantha at Saratoga , and Samantha on the Woman Question . Holley's books were enormously popular when they were published; Samantha Allen was said by one critic to have entertained as many people as had Mark Twain. She received large advances from her publishers, her works were dramatized by popular comedian Neil Burgess, and sales of at least one of her books Samantha at Saratoga put her on the better-seller list for the decade of 1880-1889.

Marilla went to town the next day and returned in the evening. Anne had gone over to Orchard Slope with Diana and came back to find Marilla in the kitchen, sitting by the table with her head leaning on her hand. Something in her dejected attitude struck a chill to Anne's heart. She had never seen Marilla sit limply inert like that. "Are you very tired, Marilla?" "YesnoI don't know," said Marilla wearily, looking up. "I suppose I am tired but I haven't thought about it. It's not that." "Did you see the oculist? What did he say?" asked Anne anxiously. "Yes, I saw him. He examined my eyes. He says that if I give up all reading and sewing entirely and any kind of work that strains the eyes, and if I'm careful not to cry, and if I wear the glasses he's given me he thinks my eyes may not get any worse and my headaches will be cured. But if I don't he says I'll certainly be stone-blind in six months. Blind! Anne, just think of it!" For a minute Anne, after her first quick exclamation of dismay, was silent. It seemed to her that she could NOT speak. Then she said bravely, but with a catch in her voice:

JOSIAH F. and IOLA COLBORN.
J. F. and Iola Colborn left Lewisville, Illinois, about the 20th of September, 1857, for Allen county, Kansas. An ox team was hitched to their effects and it "polled" its way across Missouri and into Kansas, reaching Iola October 24h, [sic] following. In June prior Mr. Colborn had made a trip of exploration and discovery in Kansas and had purchased a claim on the Neosho river, embracing the land occupied by the Otten country home, the fair grounds and a large portion of the city of Iola. His cabin rested in the wood (on the site of the Otten residence) by the river and to this our settlers proceeded upon their arrival at their destination. To prepare the cabin for the proper comfort of his family Mr. Colborn put in a floor, "battened" the door, etc., and when all was done about the house began the task of making the rails with which to fence forty acres of his farm. This tract included about half of what is now the public square and was enclosed eight rails high. He broke it out the next spring, planted it to corn and soon after returned with his family to Illinois

  • I have only recently began to have interest in my genealogy after finding the book The Genealogy of the Allen Family , by J. Scott Morris, 1951. I have long been interested in History, British and medieval history in specific, especially Scottish history. Since 1997 I have worked at the curator and historian for the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC. Growing up, I was always told I was British, which I took to mean English. After doing a bit of preliminary research, however, I found that while most all the names on my father's side of the family were English, quite a few from my mother's side were Scottish. My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Edith Mae Armstrong (married Calvin Allen). Armstrong is a very prominent Scottish border clan. My great-grandmother was Susie Lou Carlisle (mother of Calvin Allen). Carlisle is another border name, and is considered part of clan Bruce. However, I have always chosen to ally myself with the Clan Donald through my mother's maiden name of Allen. The Allen name is one that you will find in England, Scotland and Ireland, and has several origins. There is the Breton name Alan, the name coming to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. There is also the Gaelic name

The family contained at least ten Fellows of the Royal Society and several artists and poets. Presented below are brief biographical sketches and genealogical information with links to articles on the members. The individuals are listed by year of birth and grouped into generations. As a result of the close association that grew up between the Wedgwood and Darwin families, one of Josiah's daughters later married Erasmus' son Robert. One of the children of that marriage, Charles Darwin, also married a Wedgwood — Emma, Josiah's granddaughter. Robert's inheritance of Josiah's money enabled him to fund Charles Darwin's chosen vocation in natural history that led to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution . Subsequently Emma's inheritance made the Darwins a wealthy family. Josiah Wedgwood married Sarah Wedgwood (

Sex Radicals Discussion January 1996
Query: ebhovey@facstaff.wisc.edu 26 January 1996 Dear Historians: I am struggling with a problem. I am sure that the ideas of the sex radicalsEzra Heywood, Angela Tilton Heywood, Victoria Woodhull, Moses Harman, etcwere held by a very small portion of the population in the late nineteenth century U.S. But I don't feel I have enough evidence that most people believed sexuality was too dangerous to be publicly discussed. Besides the histories of the radicals-Sears, Stoehr and Spurlock most prominently-and histories/records of Anthony Comstock's group, I am using state and federal legislation, Alison Parker's diss. on the WCTU, Richelle Gurstein's diss. on reticence, Lewis Erengerg's "Steppin' Out", and the fairly polemic "Mrs. Grundy"(a930). If you have any citations that would be useful for this problem, I would be most grateful. Tomlinson Family
This page was revised on July 4, 2005
First Generation
The Quaker Josiah Tomlinson, son of Stephen Tomlinson, married Elizabeth Watson in County Kildare, Ireland, in 1744. In 1751 they received permission to emigrate to America and departed that spring together with their four children in the company of several other families. They apparently intended to settle in North Carolina, but were delivered to Charleston SC instead by a ship captain who was not well acquainted with the local geography. This led to their settlement on the West Wateree River in South Carolina, near present-day Camden. The other Quakers on this voyage were Robert Milhouse, Samuel Wyly, Timothy Kelly, Samuel Russell, Samuel Kelly, and John Furnass. At least some of these came with wives and children. Sally Ryan Tomlinson's 1999 post to the Tomlinson Family Genealogy Forum at Genealogy.com provides the documentation and much more detail for the facts I have summarized here. She suggests that Elizabeth Watson died before October 1751, perhaps on the voyage over, based on the fact that Josiah asked for a grant of 450 acres, but would have been entitled to 50 acres more if he had a livng wife. This speculation appears without attribution on several different web sites. So far as I can tell, it was Sally Ryan Tomlinson's idea. The same sites contain verbatim uncredited quotes of text that previously appeared on my page.
