-F- Fleet, Thomas 1924 Fox, Duffield 1903 Frank-Maurice 1925 Franklin Watts 1942 Fredrick Praeger 1950 Fredrick Fell 1943 Funk, Wilfred 1940
Founded by Isaac Kaufmann Funk, a Lutheran minister who in 1876 began editing and publishing tow magazines, the Homiletic Review and the Voice, the latter for the Prohibition Party. Unfortunately, neither magazine paid its way. The following year he teamed with A.W. Wagnalls, a lawyer and accountant, who got Funk on sounder financial footing. They began by publishing pamphlets and booklets for the clergy, mostly commentaries on the Bible. For more general audiences, they issued a reprint of Spurgeon's The Treasury of David, in seven volumes, issued by subscripiton one at a time for $1.00 each. The success of this led to the more ambitious 27 volume set of Dr. Joseph Parker's People's Bible, also sold by subscription one at a time. This in turn led to the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge by Schaff-Herzogg. The big break for the two men came in 1884 when Funk, watching the explosion of the so-called Second Paperback Revolution, thought there might be a market for religious paperbacks. he issued the "Standard Series", quarto-sized soft bound books.

PROGRESS MADE VISIBLE
INSPIRED BY THE WORLD'S FAIRS
World's Fairs have been used as settings or themes for numerous works of fiction, film, and music. The Fair may be merely a colorful background for a romance or adventure or it may be a key element in the plot. Visiting a World's Fair may motivate a writer to develop his or her own utopian city. For example, the Emerald City of Oz was inspired by Baum's visit to the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition. The books shown here are merely a selection; others range from The Education of Henry Adams to the Elvis Presley film It Happened at the World's Fair. Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1849-1924.

Anne had gone over to Orchard Slope with Diana and came back to find Marilla in the kitchen, sitting by the table with her head leaning on her hand. Something in her dejected attitude struck a chill to Anne's heart. She had never seen Marilla sit limply inert like that. "Are you very tired, Marilla?" "Did you see the oculist? What did he say?" asked Anne anxiously. "Yes, I saw him. He examined my eyes. He says that if I give up all reading and sewing entirely and any kind of work that strains the eyes, and if I'm careful not to cry, and if I wear the glasses he's given me he thinks my eyes may not get any worse and my headaches will be cured. But if I don't he says I'll certainly be stone-blind in six months. Blind! Anne, just think of it!" For a minute Anne, after her first quick exclamation of dismay, was silent. It seemed to her that she could NOT speak. Then she said bravely, but with a catch in her voice:

"Not Things, But Women." by Mrs. Effie Pitblado (1849-)
Publication: Eagle, Mary Kavanaugh Oldham, ed. The Congress of Women: Held in the Woman's Building, World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, U. S. A., 1893. Chicago, Ill: Monarch Book Company, 1894. pp. 793-796. [Page 793]
NOT THINGS, BUT WOMEN.
By MRS. EFFIE PITBLADO.
MRS. EFFIE PITBLADO. The thought is growing that God has ordained certain rights to woman that somebody has denied. She is beginning gradually to seek to stand alongside her brother, her husband and lover in all the rights of mankind and in all the ordinances of our great Father. Such women still get a great deal of advice. They are told that woman was made for a higher sphere (or hemisphere), the home; and that if she departs from it her womanhood will suffer, and the domestic shrine be overthrown. But all this is contradicted by the facts and experiences and history of today. Who ever thinks of saying that Mrs. Cady Stanton's domestic shrine is overthrown, or that Mrs. Isabella Beecher Hooker's, or Mrs. Julia Ward Howe's, or Mrs. Mary A. [Page 794] Livermore's children are neglected, or their husbands not attended to, or their dishes not washed and stockings not darned? This wail about domestic shrine belongs to past history; we live in new times. I wish we had time to speak of the many great and useful women of our homes and hearts.

Teresa Trupiano Barry Nineteenth-Century American Women Teresa Trupiano Barry receives her certificate from Cliff Haka, Director, MSU Libraries My favorite book collection (I have several) features books by and about nineteenth-century American women. It began innocently enough six years ago as I started looking for books by Ann S. Stephens, a popular and prolific author, whose works are the subject of my dissertation. In the course of looking for Stephens' fiction, I came across works by other nineteenth-century American authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and E. D. E. N. Southworth (after all many bookstores organize their wares in
semi- (chaotic) alphabetical order). Who could resist titles such as Changed Brides or Tried for Her Life? Although I would like to collect as many first editions as possible, two major considerations prevent this: 1. money - I am a graduate student (need I say more?); and, 2. practicality - nineteenth-century American women are the subject of my research as well as my book collection. Rare books are not for underlining and marginalia, and no matter how famous I may become as a scholar of nineteenth-century American women's writing, I doubt that my marginalia would increase the price of a book in the way that, say, Coleridge's did. So, I try to get modern reprints of those works that are available. If I need to study works from my collection in careful detail, I make photocopies and use them for close study.

Swift Stream Farm Inc., was a partnership between Joseph Allen Titmus and Josiah Smith Robert. Joseph had worked at duck farms in East and Center Moriches. Josiah owned a garage in Center Moriches, first on the west corner of Lake Avenue and Main Street, then he had a brick garage built by Ernie Barber in 1914 on the west corner of Canal and Main Street. That property had been owned by his wife, Marie Bishop Robert. Josiah, already friends with Joe, decided that one way to make a better living was to go into raising ducks…a very profitable venture at that time…and he asked Joe to go into business with him. The duck farm was built on land which was owned by my grandfather John Robert and inherited by my father Josiah Robert. Josiah owned the controlling half (51%). (See note below) The stream was already there, flowing east from under Mastic Road to Forge River. The property went from Forge River to Herkimer Street in Mastic, south to just before the railroad tracks. The buildings were built from lumber brought from Camp Upton when it was being dismantled. They built brooder houses and homes on the west end of the property. On the east side of Mastic Road, they built homes for some of the workers: Jimmy Quinichet, Tom Manson, Jimmy Plumber and Jake Husak (Carey's father). Also, down the road a little, near where Herkimer Street comes in and across from Charlie Monte's house, on that little triangle, was a house lived in by
