Marietta Holley (1836-1926) Marietta Holley (1836-1926) was a popular American humorist, often compared to Mark Twain, who used satire to comment on the social and political reform movements of her era. Holley was a private woman who lived in or near her home in Jefferson County, NY, for her entire life. She published her first book at age thirty-six, when she was commissioned by Mark Twain's publisher to write a humorous novel, My Opinions and Betsy Bobbet's (1872). This novel launched her successful series of "Samantha" books, a series that revolved around the characters of Samantha Allen, her unwise husband, Josiah Allen, and an aging, man-hungry spinster, Betsey Bobbet. All of Holley's ten "Samantha" books follow a set pattern. In the beginning of each story, Samantha encounters a problem that necessitates leaving on a journey outside of her rural hometown. On her journey, Samantha displays small-town common sense that Holley used to satirize big-city American life. Through Samantha, Holley tackled tough issues like women's suffrage, gender equality, and temperance that gave her humorous novels an insightful social perspective that won her the friendship of prominent reformers, including Susan B. Anthony.

Campus News Marietta Holley's Wit and Spunk Revisited By Greta Petry(April 8, 2005) Kate Winter at Holley's writing desk, her "writing jacket" in the background right, at the Jefferson County Historical Society. Marietta Holley is making a comeback, if Kate Winter has her way. Holley was the "female Mark Twain" of Jefferson County, N.Y., in the 1800s who combined wit and humor with the colloquialisms of the North Country to become a best-selling author. Kate Winter of the UAlbany Department of English is on a mission to bring back Holley's works to English classrooms in high schools and colleges around New York State and beyond. Toward that end, Winter scripted, appeared in, and completed work on a one-hour WPBS documentary about Holley. That documentary was aired on the Watertown public television station March 28. The DVD may be purchased through the WPBS Web site, and is now being distributed to other local PBS stations around the country.

Marietta Holley
Best Selling Writer
A North Country woman who achieved fame and a certain notoriety in her satirical books about women's rights and a woman's proper place in marriage never actually was married, but spoke with the voice of experience through her fictional heroine, Samantha Allen. Marietta Holley was born on July 16, 1836 on her father's farm near Pierrepont Manor in Jefferson County, NY. Her formal education ended at age 14 and she gave piano lessons for several years and cared for her family after her father died when she was 25. However, she yearned to be a writer and was always scribbling verses on whatever scraps of paper she could find. She wrote both poetry and fiction and attempted to sell them under a pseudonym. Once a neighbor reminded her about her duty to support the fatherless family. She predicted that Marietta would not earn enough from her writing to pay for paper and postage. She also offered to introduce Marietta to a widower who needed a hired girl to help him with his two children and 15 cows. The neighbor said that Marietta could earn three dollars a week, and if she suited the man he might marry her. Her style of writing was often compared both in content and popularity with that of the famous Mark Twain. She used wit and gentle satire to prose questions concerning women's lack of rights in a then male-dominated world. her fictional spokeswoman Samantha, wife of Josiah Allen, speaks in a rustic dialect to poke fun at all sorts of claims and pretensions. For example, Samantha cannot understand why men are trying so hard to protect women from the effort it takes to walk to the polling booth and slip a piece of paper in a box. She has noticed that these same protective instincts do not apply to churning butter, baking bread, and washing clothes, which she observes take considerably more effort.

Josiah Allen
Son of Robert Allen
Josiah Allen son of Robert Allen of Lunenburg, Co. VA., was born about 1732. He is listed as a tithable in 1750 and this would account for his age to be about 18 years of age.
Family records indicates he was married twice. The first wife died after the family moved to South Carolina. He then married (2) to Elizabeth DeLoach.
Josiah settled in what was or became Ninety-Six-District. He was Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Josiah was one of three men who was captured by the Tories and carried into the swamps and put to death.
The estate papers of Josiah Allen can be found in Probate Court Records in Abbeville, SC., and names James Allen as the oldest son. James was the next of kin and was appointed administrator of his fathers estate. This tells us that James is from the first marriage.
After the death of Josiah the widow married Aaron Etheridge. Aaron died in 1821 and left his will in Edgefield Co. SC. He names Elizabeth as his wife and widow of Josiah Allen. He also names three of the Allen children by her first marriage, namely; Nancy Mathis, Milbury Clark Allen, and Drury Allen. Elizabeth died prior to 1843

Drury Allen
Son of Robert Allen Jr
Drury Allen, son of Robert Allen Jr. was born 1 December, 1749 in Lunenburg Co. VA. He died 20 January, 1826 in Pike Co. GA. Drury enlisted in the Continental Army 1776 and served until its close.
Drury married in North Carolina to Elizabeth Yarbrough who was born 2 May, 1752 in Amelia Co. VA. and the daughter of Henry Yarbrough. She is the proven daughter from a deed when son, Stokes Allen had power of Attorney for his parents to sell land in Franklin co. that she and her husband Drury Allen had inherited from her father, Henry Yarbrough.
Both Drury and Elizabeth are buried in Georgia on their farm where they lived after the move from North Carolina. Both have tombstones and their dates are taken from their markers. Drury died 1826 and Elizabeth died two years later. From the marker of Drury which states death date 1826 is used to seperate Drury from his nephew Drury Allen, youngest son of Robert Allen Jr. The two Drury's both in age have often been confused.
The will of Drury Allen was probated 3 July, 1826 in Greene Co. GA. He left his wife the estate, after her death to be divided. He names the children of Josiah Allen, Nancy Allen, the widow of his son Clement Allen and at her death or marriage to the children of Clements Allen, to the children of Martha Allen Pyron, Nancy Allen received slaves, and son Stokes and Young D. Allen.
