Josephus Flavius Problem
Recursive Solution
A recent letter from a math teacher reminded my that the recursive solution I have been planning to describe for a while now is long overdue. This solution applies to the case where every other person is executed ( m = 2) until only one is left ( r = 1, see the complete solution After the first go-round we essentially come up with the same problem but for a different number of individuals. We have to distinguish between two cases: n is even and n is odd. When n is even, n k k fellows remain and on the second round we start with the one who was initially number 1. When n is odd, n k + 1, just before ending the first round, we get to pick out number 1; so that number 3 becomes the next victim. On the first round we eliminate k + 1 people. In both cases, k people remain for the second round. The second round is very much like the first one, except that each person's number has been doubled and, in the first case, decreased by one, while, in the second, it was increased by one. Let J( n ) denote the survivor's number. Obviously, J(1) = 1. For other

Flavius Josephus Against Apion
BOOK I
1. I SUPPOSE that by my books of the Antiquity of the Jews, most excellent Epaphroditus, As for those who set themselves about writing their histories, I mean such as Cadmus of Miletus, and Acusilaus of Argos, and any others that may be mentioned as succeeding Acusilaus, they lived but a little while before the Persian expedition into Greece. But then for those that first introduced philosophy, and the consideration of things celestial and divine among them, such as Pherceydes the Syrian, and Pythagoras, and Thales, all with one consent agree, that they learned what they knew of the Egyptians and Chaldeans, and wrote but little And these are the things which are supposed to be the oldest of all among the Greeks; and they have much ado to believe that the writings ascribed to those men are genuine. nor could Timeus agree with Antiochus and Philistius, or with Callias, about the Sicilian History, no more than do the several writers of the Athide follow one another about the Athenian affairs; nor do the historians the like, that wrote the Argolics, about the affairs of the Argives. And now what need I say any more about particular cities and smaller places, while in the most approved writers of the expedition of the Persians, and of the actions which were therein performed, there are so great differences? Nay, Thucydides himself is accused of some as writing what is false, although he seems to have given us the exactest history of the affairs of his own time.

In the war between the Jews and the Romans of 66-70 CE, the Jewish general Joseph son of Matthias defended Galilee against the Roman legions. After he had been defeated, he defected to his enemies, and advised the Roman general Vespasian. When the latter became emperor, his adviser started a career as a historian who tried to explain Judaism to the Greeks and Romans. His most important works are the Jewish War , the Jewish Antiquities , an Autobiography and an apology of Judaism Against Apion (or Against the Greeks ). Being an influential Roman citizen, he accepted a new name: Flavius Josephus. He must have died about 100 CE, more than sixty years old.
Life
Joseph was born in Jerusalem in 37 CE as the son of Matthias, a man from priestly descent, and a mother who claimed royal blood. Stated differently, he was born as a Sadducee and an aristocrat. The boy must have been a real know-it-all, because he excelled in all his studies and at the age of sixteen, he decided to find out for himself what philosophy was best - that of the Sadducees, that of the Essenes or that of the Pharisees. Although he studied all three systems, he was not content, and for three years, he lived in the desert with a hermit named Bannus. Returning to Jerusalem at the age of nineteen, he choose to become a Pharisee. Life

Josephus Flavius, Antiquities of the Jews - Book VII CONTAINING THE INTERVAL OF FORTY YEARS. FROM THE DEATH OF SAUL TO THE DEATH OF DAVID. CHAPTER 3. HOW DAVID LAID SIEGE TO JERUSALEM; AND WHEN HE HAD TAKEN THE CITY, HE CAST THE CANAANITES OUT OF IT, AND BROUGHT IN THE JEWS TO INHABIT THEREIN. 1. NOW the Jebusites, who were the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and were by extraction Canaanites, shut their gates, and placed the blind, and the lame, and all their maimed persons, upon the wall, in way of derision of the king, and said that the very lame themselves would hinder his entrance into it. This they did out of contempt of his power, and as depending on the strength of their walls. David was hereby enraged, and began the siege of Jerusalem, and employed his utmost diligence and alacrity therein, as intending by the taking of this place to demonstrate his power, and to intimidate all others that might be of the like [evil] disposition towards him. So he took the lower city by force, but the citadel held out still; whence it was that the king, knowing that the proposal of dignities and rewards would encourage the soldiers to greater actions, promised that he who should first go over the ditches that were beneath the citadel, and should ascend to the citadel itself and take it, should have the command of the entire people conferred upon him. So they all were ambitious to ascend, and thought no pains too great in order to ascend thither, out of their desire of the chief command. However, Joab, the son of Zeruiah, prevented the rest; and as soon as he was got up to the citadel, cried out to the king, and claimed the chief command.

Manetho on the Hyksos
Manetho , Aegyptiaca., frag. 42, 1.75-79.2 Tutimaeus . In his reign, for what cause I know not, a blast of God smote us; and unexpectedly, from the regions of the East, invaders of obscure race marched in confidence of victory against our land. By main force they easily overpowered the rulers of the land, they then burned our cities ruthlessly, razed to the ground the temples of the gods, and treated all the natives with a cruel hostility, massacring some and leading into slavery the wives and children of others. Finally, they appointed as king one of their number whose name was Salitis. He had his seat at Memphis, levying tribute from Upper and Lower Egypt, and leaving garrisons behind in the most advantageous positions. Above all, he fortified the district to the east, foreseeing that the Assyrians, as they grew stronger, would one day covet and attack his kingdom.
In the Saite [Sethroite] nome he found a city very favorably situated on the east of the Bubastite branch of the Nile, and called Auaris (= Avaris ) after an ancient religious tradition. This place he rebuilt and fortified with massive walls, planting there a garrison of as many as 240,000 heavy-armed men to guard his frontier. Here he would come in summertime, partly to serve out rations and pay his troops, partly to train them carefully in manoeuvres and so strike terror into foreign tribes.

Perhaps we can speculate whether Josephus, who had easy access to the writings of Seneca, simply felt free to incorporate Seneca's Stoic ideas into his own prose. After all, Josephus said that Stoics were most like Pharisees in moral habits, so such a borrowing would seem permissible. However, I am not ready to find only one single writer of any of the books of the New Testament. Anglo-European theological scholarship in the past 50 years has nearly unanimously agreed that every book in the New Testament is the product of a separate collective - a writing Community. Even the Epistles of St. Paul were modified over several generations. I am not ready to seek the final redactor of any given book - I will be satisfied to find the original Community and its Situation in Life (Sitz im Leben).

I to. It is important to see the difference between Philo and Josephus.
Philo is a greek speaking philosopher and teacher in Alexandria.
Josephus is a aramaic/hebrew speaking priest, a politican and armyleader, not an philosopher. But he has seen the suffering and dieing of the jews.
Lets take a look to the partys of the conflict:
There is the national party of jerusalem who wants a jewisch state.
There is a religios party who wants to separate the jews from the other religion, with strong religios teachings. This party get stronger after the fall of the temple.
The party around Josephus, is a small one, they want to cooperate with Rome, but they also want that the romans understand the jewish people and religion. They hope Rome will help them in the greek-jew conflicts. (Caesarea and Alexandria).
If you read Josephus "against Apion" you see, this man is not an philosopher like Philo, this is an fighter against anti-jewism, and i can't think, that he has not wrote many letters to other groups.
