SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709-1784)
The Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language; Addressed to the Right Honourable Philip Dormer, Earl of Chesterfield . London: J. and P. Knapton [etc.], 1747. Publisher Robert Dodsley suggested to Johnson that a dictionary of the English language might be a successful venture and proposed the Earl of Chesterfield as a patron. Johnson addressed this thirtyfour page pamphlet to the Earl, who did little to support the effort. Johnson's query, "Is not a patron, my lord, one who looks with unconcern upon a man struggling for life in the water, and when he has reached ground encumbers him with help?" recalls the dependency of authors on patronage throughout the eighteenth century. This system only began to change with the rise of the periodical press that led to a profession of authorship, a transition in which Johnson was a major figure. Johnson embarked on his Plan alone, although what he had projected to be the work of three years required eight, and the Dictionary only appeared in 1755.

Samuel Johnson Every man is rich or poor according to the proportion between his desires and his enjoyments.
Samuel Johnson The friendship which is to be practised or expected by common mortals, must take its rise from mutual pleasure, and must end when the power ceases of delighting each other. Samuel Johnson To improve the golden moment of opportunity, and catch the good that is within our reach, is the great art of life.

Samuel Johnson - a select bibliography
The best part of every author is in general to be found in his book, I assure you.
Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson lived by his pen from the age of 28 until he received a pension at the age of 53. He wrote essays, reviews, sermons, biographies, poetry, an edition of Shakespeare's plays and the Dictionary of the English Language . Even after financial necessity had ceased to drive him, he still produced many works, including A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland and the Lives of the Poets . The Yale collected edition will run to 24 volumes.
Of the making of books and articles about Johnson, there is no end. There are studies of every aspect of his life and work, from his prose style to his politics, from his religion to his health. No attempt has been made to deal with these here. There is a useful bibliography of secondary literature in Clingham's volume, noted below under "Starting points". Pride and pleasure, pomp and plenty,
Great * * * * * * *, are now your own.
Free to mortgage or to sell,
Wild as wind, and light as feather,
Bid the sons of thrift farewell. Call the Betsies, Kates, and Jennies,
All the names that banish care;
Show the spirit of an heir. All that prey on vice and folly
Joy to see their quarry fly:
There the gamester, light and jolly,
There the lender, grave and sly. Wealth, my lad, was made to wander, Let it wander as it will; Call the jockey, call the pander, Bid them come and take their fill. When the bonny blade carouses, What are acres? What are houses? Only dirt, or wet or dry. Should the guardian friend or mother Tell the woes of wilful waste, You can hang or drown at last!

Year 3 verbatim . These conversations are interesting intrinsically and because Johnson numbered many of the leading men and women of his time amongst his friends: among women, the writers Anna Seward, Elizabeth Carter, Charlotte Lennox, Elizabeth Montagu, Hester Thrale, Hannah More and Fanny Burney, and, among men, Joshua Reynolds the painter, David Garrick the actor, Joseph Warton the literary critic, Thomas Warton the literary historian, Thomas Percy the antiquarian, Edward Gibbon the historian of Rome, Edmund Burke the statesman, the Shakespearian scholars Edmond Malone and George Steevens, and the playwrights Oliver Goldsmith and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Literature 3 ; there is little in the period that does not throw light on Johnson or that Johnson did not illuminate.

Did you know?
Johnson suffered from bouts of extreme depression, characterised by Boswell as "a horrible hypochondria... dejection, gloom, and despair" which left him with chronic tics, possibly Tourette's Syndrome. Critical verdict Strikingly clever, startlingly ugly and indefatigably hard-working, Johnson produced his first poem at three, on "good master Duck". Like Wilde, he often gets remembered for his quotability rather than works, thanks to Boswell's biography (in fact largely reconstructed from memory). With his Lives of the Poets, edition of Shakespeare and periodical essays he advanced criticism, biography and journalism; Rasselas, written to pay for his mother's funeral, is a no-word-wasted search for human fulfilment which ends with a "conclusion, in which nothing is concluded". His great work, the Dictionary - which defines lexicographer as "a harmless drudge" - was written over nine years in one room with borrowed books and six copyists.
