Just a 20 minute drive, along a picturesque Highway 54, east of the City of Brantford , is the second oldest national historic site at Six Nations, Chiefswood, the birthplace of Famous Poetess, E.PAULINE JOHNSON
The two-storey white frame mansion overlooks the banks of the Grand River. It was here that E.Pauline Johnson,(who's Mohawk name was Tekahionwake) was born(1861 - 1913) and wrote some of her most famous poems including "The Song My Paddle Sings" as she watched the Grand River roll by from her second storey bedroom window. Today her former mansion home welcomes visitors against an elegant background of parkland. The house quickly became known as the''Indian Mansion" and is the first pre confederation Indian mansion to be built. The mansion is well known to having two front entrances and no back door.
It was said at the time the house was to face the "Indian on the river and the white man on the road." E.Pauline Johnson lived in the home for 23 years before traveling the country reading her poetry to Canadians from ocean to ocean. She is best known for her collection of poems

Text from the E. Pauline Johnson Plaque
In this house "Chiefswood", erected about 1853, was born the Mohawk poetess Emily Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake). Her father, Chief G.H.M. Johnson a greatly respected leader of the Six Nations, built "Chiefswood" as a wedding gift for her English mother, a cousin of the well-known American novelist William Dean Howells. By her writing and dramatic recitals from her own works in Great Britain and throughout North America, Pauline made herself the voice of the Indian race in the English-tongue. No book of poetry by a Canadian has outsold her collected verse, "Flint and Feather". Home Subject Directory Location Directory Search ... Contact Me

Her Majesty's Guest

(Tekahionawake)
from The Moccasin Maker
William Briggs, Toronto, 1913. I have never been a good man, but then I have never pretended to be one, and perhaps that at least will count in my favor in the day when the great dividends are declared. My friends, however, still credit me with one virtue; that is an absolute respect for my neighbor's wife, a feeling which, however, does not extend to his dollars. His money is mine if I can get it, and to do myself justice I prefer getting it from him honestly, at least without sufficient dishonesty to place me behind prison bars. Some experience has taught me that when a man is reduced to getting his living, as I do, by side issues and small deals, there is no better locality for him to operate than around the borders of some Indian Reserve. The pagan Indian is an unsuspicious fool. You can do him up right and left. The Christian Indian is as sharp as a fox, and with a little gloved handling he will always go in with you on a few lumber and illicit whiskey deals, which means that you have the confidence of his brethren and their dollars at the same time. The Government at Ottawa awoke, stretched, yawned, then printed some flaring posters and stuck them around the border villages. The posters were headed by a big print of the British Coat of Arms, and some large type beneath announced terrible fines and heavy imprisonments for anyone caught hauling Indian timber off the Reserve, or hauling whiskey on to it. Then the Government rubbed its fat palms together, settled itself in its easy chair, and snored again.

The Times and Texts of E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake)
Carole Gerson and Veronica Strong-Boag
Frequently dismissed as a 'nature poet' and an 'Indian Princess,' E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) was not only an accomplished thinker and writer but a contentious and passionate personality who 'talked back' to Euro-Canadian cuture. This volume is the only major scholarly study that examines Johnson's diverse roles as a First Nations champion, New Woman, serious writer and performer, and Canadian nationalist. A Native advocate of part-Mohawk ancestry, Johnson was also an independent, self-supporting, unmarried woman during the period of first-wave feminism. Her versatile writings range from highly erotic poetry to polemical statements about the rights of First Nations. Based on thorough research into archival and published sources, this volume probes the meaning of Johnson's energetic career and addresses the complexities of her social, racial, and cultural position. While situating Johnson in the context of turn-of-the-century Canada, the authors also use current feminist and post-colonial perspectives to reframe her contribution. Included is the first full chronology ever compiled of Johnson's writing. Pauline Johnson was an extraordinary woman who crossed the racial and gendered lines of her time, and thereby confounded Canadian society. This study reclaims both her writings and her larger significance.

Gray's story of Pauline Johnson best Biography yet
Pauline Johnson (1861-1913), poet, author, and actress, was one of Canada's most independent and popular personalities at the turn of the century. Much has been written about her, and her writing has been re-published regularly. Her best biography yet, the 438-page Flint and Feather: the Life and Times of E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake is hot off the press this month. It is written by one of Canada's premier biographers Charlotte Gray and reads easily like a novel. Gray feels that Johnson was "one of those rare, remarkable women who rise above conventions and assumptions of their day, and carve their own paths." Most people my age studied some of her poetry in school, especially "The Song My Paddle Sings," and many remember the title of one of her books, Flint and Feather. I remember that she was called a "Mohawk Princess." A Pauline Johnson Canadian stamp was produced on her 100th birthday in 1961.

The latter follows the life of Aboriginal Canadian poet and actress Pauline Johnson, who has been all-but neglected by history.
