Biography
Emily Pauline Johnson was born March 10, 1861 at Six Nations Indian Reserve, Canada. She later adopted the native name Tekahionwake, "double wampum." Johnson was popular in her day as an entertainer, reading poems about her native heritage in tours that crossed Canada, the United States, and England. In Canada Johnson travelled to remote settlements that seldom saw any other entertainment. Johnson's work faded into obscurity following her death. Her first poetry collection, White Wampum , was published in 1895. She later wrote Legends of Vancouver , a collection of tales, and The Shagganappi , a novel. Johnson died in Vancouver March 7, 1913.

Johnson, Pauline (Tekahionwake)
Mohawk writer and performed Born at Chiefswood on the Grand River Reserve of the Six Nations, near Brantford, Ontario, Emily Pauline Johnson was the daughter of George Henry Martin Johnson, Mohawk (Chief Teyonnhehkewea), and Emily Susanna Howells, English-born cousin of William Dean Howells. Johnson's father and paternal grandfather were strong influences on her life. The latter, John "Smoke" Johnson (Sakayengwaraton), was a hero of the War of 1812 and a renowned orator in the Iroquois councils. A gifted speaker in his own right, her father frequently made speeches on behalf of his people and served as a liaison between the Six Nations community and the outside world. Johnson was reared at Chiefswood, the impressive house built by her father that became a gathering place for Indian and white visitors. She was primarily educated at home by her mother, who stimulated her children's love of literature by reading them works by the English romanticists. At age fourteen, Emily entered Brantford Collegiate Institute, where she remained until 1877. Her greatest pleasure there was performing in plays and pageants, although her parents opposed her desire to become an actress. After her return to Chiefswood, she devoted the next two years to visiting friends and writing poetry. Not all of Johnson's childhood was idyllic. Because her father fearlessly tried to eradicate illegal traffic in alcohol and timber on the reserve, he was severely beaten in 1865, clubbed and shot in 1873, and assaulted again in 1878. George never fully recovered from these attacks; he died in 1884. The family then abandoned Chiefswood and a gracious lifestyle to live in nearby Brantford. After Smoke Johnson's death in 1886, Johnson assumed her great-grandfather Jacob Johnson's Indian name, signing all her poems "E. Pauline Johnson" and "Tekahionwake."

She knew and could represent both. Bringing two very different but strong-rooted cultures into closer contact and understanding, she was a powerful literary influence.

Review by Darleen Golke. excerpt:
Pauline bows her head; there is no applause, not even a whimper of protest from the audience. She is sure she has offended them all and has already turned to flee from the stage when suddenly they are on their feet, clapping wildly and shouting "Bravo!" and "Encore!" Astonished, she turns back to them, bows again, then walks quickly from the stage. The applause goes on and on. She can't believe it! They liked her poem! In the wings, a smiling Yeigh is waiting for her, grateful that she has saved his literary evening and his reputation. He leads her back to centre stage, and when the applause at last dies down, he promises his audience that Pauline will recite again after the intermission. "You're the star of my show!" he tells her as he escorts her backstage again. This is all overwhelming for Pauline because, although she is thirty-two years old, this is the first time she has ever recited one of her poems in public. In the fall of 1999, XYZ Publishing launched a new series, "Quest Library," featuring 10,000-word narrative biographies of Canadians aimed primarily at social studies and Canadian history students. Among the early offerings, Betty Keller, author of an extensively researched 1981 biography of Pauline Johnson, presents the talented writer and performer as the "first aboriginal voice of Canada." Keller focuses on the years between Johnson's debut as a recital artist in 1892 and her death in 1913.

by Patricia Belier originally published in
The Officers' Quarterly
v. 11, n. 3, Summer 1995, p. 10-12 The turn-of-the-century in Canada has been called "the golden age of travelling performers and reciters," several of the more famous having appeared in Fredericton, among them Pauline Johnson, one of the most popular and prominent figures in Canadian Literature and the author of six books: The White Wampum Canadian Born Legends of Vancouuer Flint and Feather The Moccasin Maker The Shagganappi Emily Pauline Johnson was born in 1861 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She was the youngest of four children of Mohawk Chief George Henry Martin Johnson (1816-1884) and his English wife, Emily Susanna Howells (1824-1898). George Johnson acted as an interpreter for the local Anglican missionary in the area, Rev. Adam Elliot, and he shared the Elliot family home, as did Miss Howells, who had come to Canada in 1845 to live with her sister Eliza (Mrs. Elliot). Thus, the stage was set for the romantic union of a Mohawk chief, "Onwanonsyshon" (Lord ofthe Big House), and his bride, a woman with Quaker roots from Bristol, England. Each was a descendant of a proud and respected lineage: the Howells were merchants and distinguished political and professional figures; the Johnsons belonged to the noble families of the Iroquois Confederacy, their original name of "Tekahionwake" being dropped years earlier, the name Johnson having been offered by Sir William Johnson, an early Superintendant of Indian Affairs in British North America.
