Family History
The research into our family line takes us back to the early 18th century when William Rye was born; possibly in 1709. He had a first marriage with no known issue but his second marriage to Mary Hulse in 1758, resulted in following generations. These origins were in Kent and to some it is thought that the surname originated from Normandy. There is a village there named Ryes where Hubert de Ryes, a favourite of William the Conqueror, lived and it is thought that he, or his sons were rewarded with lands in England after the conquest. Our particular ancestor moved to Carlton-in-Lindrick, near Worksop, Notts around 1838. The family has diverged widely since then and through the Internet we have now found distant relatives in the United States and Australia. Anyone interested in more specific details can contact us using our contact form.

THORP SPRING CEMETERY
Hood County, Texas
This is one of the older cemeteries in the county with a great deal of history. It is well maintained, secluded, quiet and shaded by many oak trees. It is enclosed by a chainlink fence with two gateways allowing automobile traffic to drive around the area. There are many graves from the 1800's. The earliest marked is 1869. Epitaphs are often lengthy with "Killed by Indians," "Murdered," and "Founders of Thorp Spring" included. Add Ran College located in this town at a very early date. It brought many settlers here for educational purposes. Add Ran is found mentioned on a number of headstones. It is regrettable that there are as many graves well marked by fieldstones only. Vandalism has taken it's toll; so one must wonder how many stones have been carried away. Sadly, the vandals are still at work today. Nature has proven to be a vandal as well. Some stones are wearing away. To drive to the cemetery from Granbury, take Hwy #4 north. At the 900 turn as you approach the town watch for streets to your left. At the third street turn to the left. (Streets have no names.) Drive for .6 miles to the end of the road. The cemetery is on the left.

Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site transcribed by Les and Dorothy Howland, California The following records are courtesy of the Roxbury Library Associations History Room . Hard Copies of such records are available for viewing and duplication during normal library hours. This compilation is from the notebooks of Amy Gavette and was done in the 1960s . It was manually typed on typing paper. Needless to say some of it is faded and coping it is difficult. If dates don't match you may have to go to the Roxbury Library and see the originals, they too are starting to fade. This is not a public library, they run on support from their patrons and the History room is run by donations, and for such a small room it is packed full of information on the town of Roxbury and some Delaware county information. There are 5 columns to this database, the 5th used by only a few of the records. You will need to scroll. Also, because of the gigantic size of this database, it is broken into many sections. Cannonsville Reservoir The construction of the Cannonsville Reservoir in Delaware County, NY was started in 1955 and completed in 1965. Most of the cemetery removals took place in the year of 1963. The following cemeteries were removed. Beers, Brewer, Cannonsville, Granton, Rock Rift, Rock Royal, and Wakeman. Unknowns were moved from Barlow and Olsen cemeteries. Many thanks go to Joel A. Miele, Sr., P.E. Commissioner, The City of New York Department of Environmental Protection , for granting permission to publish this data regarding these removals and reinterments. Thanks also to Edward J. Stanton, A.C.E. Manager, Office of Claims, (P.O. Box D, Downsville, NY 13755) who was responsible for this compilation, and who provided us the disk with which to work. You will need to scroll horizontally across the page, as I have formatted with nine columns in order to keep data for each record together. Since the party interested in the removal is listed along with relationship of grave occupant, these records are extremely valuable for genealogical research. Since this page was established on January 30, I have added three more columns - 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Interested Parties. Scroll to the end of record to see if occupant surname you are interested in has further interested parties. Joyce Riedinger, January 30, 1997 - Delaware County NY - Genealogy and History Site
