Joaquin Miller was born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller on a farm near Liberty, Ind., on Sept. 8, 1837. His parents set out for the West in 1852 and settled in the Willamette Valley, Ore. Within 2 years their restless son left for the California gold mines. For a time Miller lived with northern California Indians near Mt. Shasta. He was implicated in the massacre of the Pit River Indians, attended college briefly, and operated a pony-express service between the Idaho mines and the West Coast. In 1862 Miller became editor of the Democratic Register in Eugene, Ore. Before the year was over he had married and had founded a new paper, the

I'd like to hear from parents of children of color at Joquain Miller Elementary, particularly parents of Latino children. How are your children faring? Is the staff sensitive to racial issues and sterotypes? How diverse is the teaching staff? Is there a curriculum dealing with diversity? Do the kids segregate themselves? Do the teachers sterotype them? What are the other parents like? I was taken aback by the film I saw of the living history project in which half the kids dressed as Indians wearing war paint etc. Do you see this as a good place for your child? Thanks concerned parent of prospective student Would like to know other parents experience at the Joaquin Miller Elementary School. I have a four year old daughter who will start kindergarten next year. I would also like to know more about their experience with the Adventure Time. My daughter would to need to stay there the whole day. Argus My son is in 1st grade and this is his second year at Joaquin Miller. We are very pleased with the school. His 2 teachers are excellent; very creative, dedicated, high energy, engaged and seasoned professionals. The class size is small (20 students), and there is a lot of parental involvement, from helping out in the classroom, to going on field trips, organizing class parties and amazing efforts by many many parents to fund raise for the school. JM raises over $100,000 to spend on enrichment activites. The PTA is a very motivated and hard working group.

TILDEN / WILDCAT CANYON REGIONAL PARK Situated in the Oakland Hills, Joaquin Miller Park contains one of the only Urban Second Growth Redwood Groves in existence. Since the Save the Redwoods League donated the Redwood Grove to the city of Oakland in 1928, it has been extensively used by a multitude of user groups including: Scouts, picnickers, hikers, motorcyclists, day campers, bird watchers, naturalists, bicyclists, dog-walkers and joggers. Still, despite being held hostage by its geographical location right at the edge of an urban area that now includes over six million people, the park retains much of its natural beauty, health, vitality, and majesty. Unfortunately a recent proposal to ban bikes from the park has rekindled the age-old dispute over equal access. So, please, follow all of the proper biking rules. This site is always being added to. If you have any suggestions, or would just like to contact me, you can send me an e-mail and I will get back to you very soon.

Course Setter's Notes 2003 Event http://www.baoc.org/results/r03/r030824.html BAOC welcomes you to some midsummer Orienteering. Only a few miles from Downtown Oakland, Joaquin Miller Park (JMP) was the site of the first BAOC event in 1978. We plan to offer some interesting orienteering courses. The terrain features an area of flat Redwood forest that all the courses will cross. Much of the rest of the park is dotted with picnic areas and recreational sites, but some parts can be very steep and thick. We plan to offer the usual 7 courses. Each will transverse a variety of terrain. The Blue and Red courses will provide a tough physical challenge with several steep uphill climbs. The Green and Orange courses involve a moderate physical effort with one steep climb. The Brown, Yellow, and White courses will have a minimum of climb. (See the Course Setter's Notes for details.)

Some Joaquin Miller Park Erosion Sources
I'm not sure where this erosion on the Sunset Loop Trail is coming from, but I know where it's going: straight into Palo Seco Creek.
The biggest mess in the watershed is probably this huge gully above the Sunset Trail, where Castle Park Trail heads steeply uphill. Here's Kristen inspecting the damage.
Here's a view of the top of the area, from higher up the slope. The tree stumps are Eucalyptus that were cut after they were damaged in a freeze many years ago. The orange fence is on the edge of the West Trail. There are houses just across the trail; hope that sewer pipe is OK. There's some kind of drain structure just across the West Trail. It will be interesting to watch it in a heavy rain. In addition to the big gully, the land on both sides is slumping and sliding; the whole area affected is maybe two or three acres. We found a few stubby, gnawed oaks on the hillside and a totally goat-browsed elderberry, so any revegetation would need to include protection from the omnivores.
I haven't checked out most of the upper watershed yet, but here's a pic of some erosion from Chabot entering the storm drain inlet that crosses under Skyline, into the headwaters of Cinderella Creek.

[Manuscript] "The Arbor Day Cross" / Joaquin Miller. Miller, Joaquin, 1837-1913. 1893 February 2. [1] leaf. 28 cm. A typewritten verse has been fastened to a flyer by Miller detailing the history of Arbor Day in California; below the description and accompanying image, he has penned the lines which appear transcribed on the card in his own hand. Miller relates the history of planting the Arbor Day Cross on Yerba Buena Island and then on the hills over Oakland, accomplished at the hands of schoolchildren through the collaboration of Governor Howard and the Division of Forestry. Below this explanation, Miller has written out a verse, "There is no ugly thing on earth;/ There is no evil anywhere/ There is no thing that hath not worth/ If man but seeks to see it there." Born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller in Indiana, Joaquin changed his name to add to the poetic mystique he cultivated to his advantage when he toured in Europe, billing himself the "Byron of the Rockeis." Miller acquired 70 acres near Oakland, California on which he planted extensive trees; this property was later sold to the city and constitutes the heart of a park named in his honor. Miller, Joaquin, 1837-1913.

BY THE PACIFIC OCEAN
by Joaquin Miller
Here room and kingly silence keep
Companionship in state austere;
The dignity of death is here,
The large, lone vastness of the deep;
Here toil has pitched his camp to rest:
The west is banked against the west.
Above yon gleaming skies of gold
One lone imperial peak is seen;
While gathered at his feet in green Ten thousand foresters are told: And all so still! so still the air That duty drops the web of care. The awful deep walks with the deep, Where silent sea doves slip and sweep, And commerce keeps her loom and weaves The dead red men refuse to rest; Their ghosts illume my lurid West. JOAQUIN MILLER , poet of the Sierras, was, in the words of Lillie Langtry, "a child of nature and perhaps the most picturesque personality of the literary world. It was at Lord Houghton's house in Arlington Street, London, that I happened to meet the famous Californian. After dinner there was the usual reception, and presently [Lord Houghton] led up to me a very tall, lean man, with a pale intellectual face, yellow hair so long that it lay in curls about his shoulders, a closely cropped beard, and a dreamy expression in his light eyes. I don't remember what he wore, except that it was unconventional. He was so new and strange, that his apparel, whatever it was, seemed to complete the picture . . . "
