Joaquin Miller and the Performance of Place
Born on the long trail to Oregon, Joaquin (Cincinnatus Hiner) Miller spent his childhood and youth in the Pacific Northwest, one of the wildest remaining parts of the country at that time. Like Bret Harte and Mark Twain, he briefly tried a number of different jobs, including a stint riding the pony express, an interval as a teacher, some time with the Indians of the Pitt River tribe (during which time he was rumored to have married a Native American woman and fathered a daughter). Finally, he spent a short period of time studying law before settling temporarily in Eugene, Oregon where he took up the editorship of a local paper and devoted himself to writing poetryhis first love throughout life.
In 1863, he and his new wife, the poet Minnie Myrtle (Theresa Dyer), honeymooned in San Francisco, hoping to break into the literary scene and remain permanently. They both were successful at placing some of their verse in the teaming journals of the Bay Area, but it is not likely that they were paid for any of their efforts. In fact, Col. Joseph Lawrence, owner-editor of the Golden Era , far from encouraging Miller, actively discouraged any further attempts; of Miller's poem "Oregon," he said that its rhymes were "as suggestively simple as a schoolboy's," and recommended that their author "cease wooing the muses and return to Oregon to grow 'taters.'"

Joaquin Miller (1837-1913)
By Walt Curtis © 1995
Did Oregon's first true laureates, Joaquin Miller, "the Poet of the Sierras," and Samuel Leonidas Simpson, "Oregon's sweetest singer," ever meet? It seems doubtful. If they didn't, it seems too bad. They had a lot in common. Both were lawyers, although neither practiced much law. Miller would hang out his shingle in Oro Fino, Idaho, but have to turn to pony express. A few years later in Canyon City, another gold rush town, he was elected judge. Sorting out truth from fiction in Miller's life is like perhaps unraveling a horse-hair lariat and weaving it back together blindfolded. Will that rope hold when you lasso the mustang? One of the most celebrated literary figures of the 19th century, Joaquin taught Buffalo Bill how to dress! Poet and critic William Everson [Brother Antoninus] hails Miller as the inceptor of the western literary archetype. When he began publishing in Oregon, he couldn't write for sour owl manure. He's still a mediocre poet whose reputation has spiraled downward, to the bottom of the canon. Why do some of us love him? He's a cosmic character and the consumate showman...the splendid poseur who wrote authentic, noble and beautiful tales of our American West. Some of these stories he really lived. Alan Rosenus of Urion Press republished The Selected Writings of Joaquin Miller. The best evoke Oregon: "In the Land of Clouds" (Mt. Hood), "An Old Oregonian in the Snow" (Did Miller observe Joe Meek facing off the Californians? It's believable.). "Bill Cross and His Pet Bear," set in the Willamette Valley, is one of the True Bear Stories (1900), a fun collection from Capra Press.

Review by Gilbert Wesley Purdy
Cincinnatus "Nat" Miller (1837-1913 ) was an unusually colorful character even for the old west. During his long life he was a gold miner, a cowhand and horse thief, an otherwise felon and fugitive, a cook, a lawyer, a schoolteacher, a Pony Express rider, a newspaper reporter and editor, a judge, a poet, a journalist for national circulation magazines and more besides. During the years leading up to the Civil War he was virulently pro-slavery. During the years after, he wrote accolades for John Brown. He appears to have fought with the settlers and the Indians—on both sides in a number of minor skirmishes between the two—but the details are vague and his own recollections were famously creative. As much as anything, he was an opportunist and a teller of tall tales. In 1870, Miller left the United States for London, England. Europe was fascinated by cowboys and Indians and he was a hit. He dressed in garish colors and exaggerated western fashion and presented a card that read: "Joaquin Miller: Byron of the Rockies." (He had adopted the name from Joaquin Murieta, thinking it a better name for a poet than "Cincinnatus.") He dined with Anthony Trollop, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce, among others, and strew rose petals at the feet of Lily Langtry. (Bierce is said to have called him "The greatest liar this country has ever produced.") His poetry was touted by the finest English poets as exemplary of western naivete.

Born Cincinnatus Heiner Miller in 1841 (or thereabouts), the poet took the name Joaquin in honor of his hero, the equally colorful Mexican folk hero, Joaquin Murieta (or Murietta ). Miller also called himself " The Poet of the Sierras ," as he traveled to England and throughout the US, including Washington D. C. With the proceeds of this career as a flamboyant poet of the Old West, he purchased land near Oakland, California, in 1886. Following his death in 1913, the ranch, which he called The Hights became part of the municipal park system. Today, visitors to Joaquin Miller Park can still see the monuments he built to his heroes: Moses, Gen. John Frémont, and Elizabeth and Robert Browning. His little house, now boarded up, is clearly visible from Joaquin Miller Road Miller's most successful poem, " Columbus ," was at one time a staple in the California curriculum. Senator James Phelan valued his work so highly that he incorporated a bust of Miller along with those of John Muir and Edwin Markham on the grounds of his Saratoga estate Villa Montavo . The state of Oregon has preserved the cabin in which he was born, turning it into a museum in Canyon City, Oregon. He has been the subject of many biographies, including a recent historical novel
