Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909)
Sarah Orne Jewett was born in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a country doctor, and she often accompanied him on his horse-and-buggy rounds among sick people on the local farms. She later said that she got her real education from these trips rather than from her classes at Miss Rayne's School and the Berwick Academy. She had a fine ear for local speech and the native idiom, which she used to good effect in her stories. Impressed as a girl by the sympathetic depiction of local color in the fiction of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jewett began to write stories herself, publishing her earliest one, "Jenny Garrow's Lovers," in a Boston weekly when she was eighteen years old. Shortly after her twentieth birthday, her work was accepted by the prestigious Atlantic Monthly, and her career was launched. Jewett published her first collection of stories, Deephaven , in 1877.

by James Notman in Pickard, Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier Looking back upon her brief friendship with Sarah Orne Jewett - to whom she dedicated O Pioneers! - Willa Cather wrote in "Miss Jewett" that she seemed a "lady in the old sense." "There was an ease, a graciousness, a light touch in conversation, a delicate unobtrusive wit. You quickly recognized that her gift with the pen was one of many charming personal attributes." Cather goes on to characterize Jewett's attachment to her town that was so visible in the last months of her life: "When she was at home, in South Berwick, there were the old friends of her childhood to whom she must always be accessible ... Every day, in every season of the year, she enjoyed the beautiful country in which she had the good fortune to be born. Her love of the Maine country and seacoast was the supreme happiness of her life" (

THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) was born and died in South Berwick, Maine. Her work was widely published and highly esteemed in her own lifetime. THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS (1896) is considered Jewett's finest work, described by Henry James as her "beautiful little quantum of achievement." Despite James's diminutives, the novel remains a classic. Because it is loosely structured, many critics view the book not as a novel, but a series of sketches; however, its structure is unified through both setting and theme. Jewett herself felt that her strengths as a writer lay not in plot development or dramatic tension, but in character development.
Indeed, she determined early in her career to preserve a disappearing way of life, and her novel can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants who lived in the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast. Pontine's production of THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS uses storytelling, music, puppets, and masks to create a theatrical context for Jewett's vision of life in New England maritime villages. A cast of Jewett characters is introduced through the course of the play: Mrs. Todd, a country woman whose knowledge of local herbs and traditional medicine earns her living; Mrs. Blackett, the matriarch of Green Island who remains a child at heart; and Captain Littlefield, who is haunted by memories of his strange adventures at sea. Pontine's collage of poetic movement, intimate stories, pastoral imagery, and traditional melodies pays homage to the simple beauty and insight of Sarah Orne Jewett's writing.

Supernatural Horror: Authors and Themes M R JAMES' NEW ENGLAND READING
What would M R James read while visiting his friends? According to Gwendolen McBryde's Letters to a Friend he was fond of stories with a New England setting. He is recorded as reading and re-reading one of the best New England novels, The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) by Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909). In a letter of January 1928, James discusses H P Lovecraft's major study "Supernatural Horror in Literature". Although he has no time for Lovecraft's style, he agrees with some of his judgments, including his praise of another New England writer, Mary E Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930). Freeman wrote a respectable number of excellent supernatural stories set in New England , as part of her prolific output of stories and novels. M R James characterizes the collection The Wind in the Rosebush (1903) as 'quite successful domestic New England : I like it'(2). While both Freeman and Jewett wrote supernatural fiction, it is probably true to say that it is Freeman who is the better known for her contributions to the genre. And both wrote mainstream stories of domestic New England , but it seems that Sarah Orne Jewett is the better-known of the two contemporaries for that.

    http://www.aber.ac.uk/tfts/journal/archive/hamlin.html
Consciousness, Literature and the Arts Archive Volume 3 Number 2, August 2002 Consciousness and Communication in Jewett’s The Country of the Pointed Firs by Annemarie Hamlin The trance states induced by mesmerism and closely associated with spiritualist practices in nineteenth-century America offered writers ample ground for creating sensational and romantic stories. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville and Henry James all took their turn at producing novels and stories that featured the darker and other-worldly sides of mesmerism and spirit communication, and these representations have come to dominate our historical perceptions of these practices. But late in the nineteenth-century, Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) produced a very different sort of tale that offers a different picture of spirit communicationone that moves beyond the trance paradigm to an alternative kind of communication. Jewett’s The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is a work highly informed by spiritualist practices, yet it does not feature the seances, the spirit rappings, or stage-show trances utilized by Jewett’s earlier literary colleagues. In fact, the presence of spiritualism is so subtle that the novel has rarely been examined in the context of spiritualist practices. This article offers a new way to read The Country of the Pointed Firs through the historical lens of Jewett’s fluency with spiritualismand argues that in writing the novel, Jewett herself offered Americans a new way to think about the altered states of concsiouness produced through spiritualistic practices.

Berwick Academy's Fogg Building, with its many Whitman windows ( Berwick Academy One day in 1994, while involved with the parents' association at my daughter's school in our town of South Berwick, Maine, I heard someone mention an unusual stained-glass window. It was supposed to be in Berwick Academy's Fogg Memorial Building, a Romanesque landmark completed 100 years earlier to house both the school and the town's library. Dating to 1791 and the oldest school in Maine, Berwick Academy claims among its graduates the author Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909). Jewett's name was somehow linked with this window. At Fogg Memorial, its gold cupola presiding from a forested hilltop over a rural valley fast succumbing to suburban development, I asked where to see the window, but nobody knew. I looked around and discovered on the second floor, in a corner of a math classroom, a drab specimen some seven feet tall and the width of the old roll-up shade it was hiding behind. Its dedication, "To the memory of many soldiers and sailors, pupils of this school who fought for their country," was lettered on the glass, along with a verse:
