The Jewetts of Portland Street
and the Four Sarah Orne Jewetts

Wendy Pirsig 2/9/2004
Research assistance by Herbie Geiler
In the mid-1800s, two cousins named Sarah Orne Jewett, 29 years apart in age, lived as neighbors in South Berwick village. Their families' farmhouses and barns stood a few hundred yards from each other on the road that was then the main thoroughfare between Boston and Portland. The two young women's precise relationship was first cousin once removed, as they were descended from two of the Jewett brothers who had settled in South Berwick in the early 1800s, Captain Theodore F. Jewett (1787-1860) and his brother Thomas Jewett (1789-1864). Business partners in the world shipping trade, the men headed two of the community's most prominent families. Their front doors faced what now is known as Portland Street or Route 4, in those days unbroken by any cross streets at all. Most of the south side of Portland Street was open farmland, but at the corner where it intersects Main Street, the brothers operated a West Indies store. Their Salmon Falls River shipyard lay just over a mile to the south. Captain Theodore F. Jewett's first wife had been Sarah Orne (c.1791-1819); she thus became the first Sarah Orne Jewett. His granddaughter by his son, Dr. Theodore H. Jewett, was named Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), and she became one of Maine's most famous authors.

Jewett grew up around books and devoured them constantly so it wasn't a wonder that she should show a propensity for writing.
As a young adult, she developed ties to a very strong female community. This circle constituted a powerful network which enabled women like Jewett to develop full-fledged careers, even amidst a conservative social environment which frowned upon proper ladies engaging in activities outside the home.
Jewett's best work was based on the Maine countryside, whose people and places she knew intimately and loved dearly throughout her entire life. Her work features the people she was most familiar with of the everyday world of villages and ordinary people. Jewett's work was largely forgotten and/or scorned after her rather successful lifetime

Author Info: Sarah Orne Jewett
Okay, the time has finally come for me to make a horrible personal admission. I've had a secret for years now, one that strikes right to the core of my manhood : of an evening, I enjoy a nice cup of tea. Actually, it's an enormous mug and I steep the tea until it looks like coffee, but I still acknowledge how sketchy it all appears. Nor do I imagine my case will be helped if I state that I most often enjoy said beverage on Sunday nights during Booknotes on CSPAN, though as a general matter I do occasionally partake when I sit down to read, after we get the kids to bed. ThereI've said itthat monkey's off my back. Why here? Why now? Because, this book may be the sine qua non of tea-sipping books. Perhaps the central theme that we've been developing over the course of these reviews is the existence of a fundamental tension in human affairs, between the basically feminine desire for security and the basically masculine desire for freedom. We've examined many examples of the lattereverything from Huckleberry Finn to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest but good examples of the former have been rarer, presumably because I just read fewer women authors. (Though we have found some good examples, try particularly the

Sarah Orne Jewett Manuscripts Uncovered
Story posted June 15, 2004 Two previously unrecorded Sarah Orne Jewett manuscripts, "A Dark Night" and "A Village Patriot," were recently donated to Bowdoin College by Ms. Nathalie B. Thompson, a private collector from Vero Beach, Florida. Ms. Thompson, who is aware of Bowdoin's high regard for the Maine writer, wanted to place the manuscripts where they could be used by an "appreciative community." The manuscripts will be housed in the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections and Archives at the Bowdoin library. Such manuscripts are extremely important for literary scholars and students of writing, because they provide primary evidence for research into establishing what an author wrote, how that text was revised during the process of editing, and both why and how published versions of a literary piece differ from the final draft and, over time, from each other.

PORTLAND STREET CEMETERY TOUR July, 2005 Currier, Micajah – d. 1818
Micajah Currier was a merchant. His store may have been situated in the building known in the 19 th century as the Brown Store. It is still standing in Central Square at 12 Portland Street where the Portland Street Grill is located today. Currier's sister Deborah married William Burleigh, who became the first Congressman from this district. In March, 1817, Micajah Currier, in writing his will, bequeathed that his executors “purchase a good bell of size and weight” to be inscribed with Currier's name, and erect it for the use of South Berwick's residents, provided they furnish a building within two years of his death to hand in which to hang it. This bell has not been found, but Currier had another important legacy. His will provides funds for the creation of a new burying ground “for the inhabitants of Berwick and South Berwick,” and Currier's tomb was the first to be placed there in 1818. This was how the Portland Street Cemetery began. It was named Portland Street, as Agamenticus Road would have been a country lane without a name during that time period. Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909)
Sarah Orne Jewett was a regional writer who grew up in the coastal town of South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a country doctor who allowed his daughter to accompany him on his rounds; many of the rural people Jewett encountered inspired her later fiction. In 1869 one of Jewett's first stories was accepted for publication in the Atlantic Monthly by William Dean Howells. With Howells's encouragement, Jewett continued to craft tales about the rural inhabitants of "Deephaven," a fictional town based on the bygone days of South Berwick. Strong women populated her rural tales, and strong women comprised her friends in the artistic circles of Boston in the 1870s; Annie Adams Fields, wife of the late publisher James T. Fields, would be her closest companion from 1881 until her death. Jewett's works include A Country Doctor A White Heron (1886), and her classic

SARAH ORNE JEWETT (1849-1909) was born and died in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was the region's most distinguished doctor and, as a child, Jewett often accompanied him on his round of patient visits. She began writing poetry at an early age and when she was only 19 her short story "Mr. Bruce" was accepted by the Atlantic Monthly. Her association with that magazine continued, and William Dean Howells, who was editor at that time, encouraged her to publish her first book, Deephaven (1877), a collection of sketches published earlier in the Atlantic Monthly. Through her friendship with Howells, Jewett became acquainted with Boston's literary elite, including Annie Fields, with whom she developed one of the most intimate and lasting relationships of her life. The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is considered Jewett's finest work, described by Henry James as her "beautiful little quantum of achievement." Despite James's diminutives, the novel remains a classic. Because it is loosely structured, many critics view the book not as a novel, but a series of sketches; however, its structure is unified through both setting and theme. Jewett herself felt that her strengths as a writer lay not in plot development or dramatic tension, but in character development. Indeed, she determined early in her career to preserve a disappearing way of life, and her novel can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants who lived in the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast.
