Jewett, Sarah Orne (1849-1909)
page: Sarah Orne Jewett is a major figure in the literature of female romantic friendship, the precursor of modern lesbian literature. For the most part, fortune was kind to Jewett. Born on September 3, 1849, into a prosperous and stable family in South Berwick, Maine, she was the second of three daughters of Theodore H. Jewett, a country physician, and Caroline F. Perry. Sponsor Message.
She adored her father, who guided her through the family's large library and frequently allowed her to accompany him on his rounds throughout the coastal countryside because ill health made regular attendance at school difficult for her. In the course of these rambles, Jewett acquired the habits of empathy and observation that would serve her so well as a writer of sketches and narratives of New England village life. Jewett demonstrated an early inclination toward writing; she published her first story in 1868 when she was just eighteen, and she enjoyed a long and productive career. Championed by such influential editors as William Dean Howells and Horace Scudder, Jewett's work was regularly featured in

Boston Marriages Boston marriages romantic unions between women that were usually monogamous but not necessarily sexualflourished in the late nineteenth century. The term was coined in New England, around the time that numerous women's colleges such as Vassar, Smith, and Wellesley emerged. The concept of love between women was, of course, not new; "Boston marriage" and the very similar, earlier nineteenth-century term "romantic friendship" connote a type of relationship that dates back to at least the Renaissance in the West, and possibly further in the non-Western world. Boston marriages signified a new phenomenon, however, in that the women involved in them tended to be college-educated, feminist, financially independent, and career-mindedhardly the social norm among females of the day. These characteristics distinguish women bound together in Boston marriages from participants in the earlier romantic friendships. The novelist Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) is a prime example of a woman involved in a Boston marriage. A writer who described the dynamics of the Boston marriage in her 1877 novel

Sarah Orne Jewett's evocative sketches of village life in nineteenth-century Maine have earned her a place among the most important practitioners of American regional writing. Born in South Berwick, Maine, Jewett grew up steeped in the idioms and atmosphere of coastal New England. Her early experiences accompanying her father, a rural doctor, on house calls provided her with insight into the daily lives of the people who would eventually populate her fiction. Jewett's father encouraged her writing aspirations and instilled in her his taste for realistic description and restrained narrationqualities that characterized Jewett's best work.

Named for her paternal grandfather and grandmother, Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett was the second of three girls born to Theodore Herman and Caroline Frances Perry Jewett in the New England village of South Berwick, Maine. Descending on both sides from pre-Revolutionary families that had built up comfortable incomes from shipbuilding and seafaring, she was the daughter and granddaughter of physicians. As a child Jewett wished to become a doctor herself. Poor health thwarted that ambition even as it encouraged her close relationship with her father, who took her with him on medical calls to build up her strength. These trips through rural and small-town Maine provided her, by her own account, with material for her writing throughout her career.
Upon graduation from Berwick Academy in 1865, Jewett began writing short fiction. She also published poetry, literature for children, and two novels, one of which
