Comedy Title: The Dancing Partner: Clocks Author: Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) Series: Comedy ISBN:
celophaned wrapped with 'message' envelope Most famous for his classic, comic novel Three Men in a Boat (1889), which describes a rowing holiday on the Thames enjoyed by three men and their dog, Jerome K. Jerome first published The Dancing Partner three years later in Novel Notes. It is about as black as humour can get. An inventor creates a machine that can dance with all the girls at new society balls, but the results are far from satisfactory. Still in mechanical vain, this edition includes Jerome's little-known short, comic essay, Clocks.

CALL and order with credit car Title: Here We Are A Telephone Call Author: Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) Series: Comedy ISBN:
celophaned wrapped with 'message' envelope Dorothy Parker is remembered as much today for her sparkling short stories as for her poems and her witty remarks. In Here We Are a newly wedded couple prepares for the first evening of a honeymoon in New York. Both he and she face the stark possibility that marriage may not be quite as jolly as they had each anticipated. In A Telephone Call Parker's satiric wit is focussed on a hapless and frantic girl as she waits impatiently by the telephone praying that her lover will ring.

Thomas Bewick
Thomas Bewick was born at Ovingham, (10-12 miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) at Cherryburn, a farmhouse. This house has now been turned into a museum of his life and work.
He became an apprentice to an engraver in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, having to use metal rather than wood. When he had finished his apprenticeship he worked with his preferred medium, wood.
I quote: Bewick's sense of humour is very clear in a number of his pictures which portray a very earthy side of life in such a way that makes the viewer laugh with him.
He died and was buried at Ovingham.
Two years after his death, a particular swan was found to be of a distinct breed and was named the Bewick Swan after Thomas.

Randolph Caldecott
.Randolph Caldecott was born in Chester and became a great 19th century artist. He illustrated many children's books and collections of his drawings have been published. He also modelled in clay. A Caldecott medal is award each year in America to the American artist that produces the most distinguished picture book published in the preceding year. He was never strong and died when aged 39 from an organic lung disease in St Augustine. A man of great charm, with genial, overflowing spirits.

http://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/epitaphs.html
Famous Literary and Historical Epitaphs: This page contains the epitaphs found on the gravestones of various famous individuals associated with English history, literature, art, and dramatic performance. Some are found on the tombs of writers, poets, and playwrights. Others were written by famous literary or historical figures for a lost family member. A few other epitaphs are fairly famous because of their clever wit, and they are quite artistic regardless of the relative anonymity of the deceased. The tone varies in each. Some are tragic, some humorous, some devout, and some sublime, but they are all uniquely human in sentiment. Many of them use spelling, capitalization, anagrams, and puns for artistic effect. They are listed roughly chronologically by date of death, starting in the medieval period , moving up to the Renaissance , then the Enlightenment , the Nineteenth Century , and finally the Twentieth Century King Alfred the Great (849-899, ruler of Britain, founder of British navy, and translator of Boethius, monument erected in 19th century)

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Welcome!
I'm currently working towards my PhD in the Mathematical Foundations Group in the Department of Computer Science . After my first degree, in Mathematics at Emmanuel College in Cambridge , I came to Manchester to do an MSc in Mathematical Logic in the Mathematics department during which time I became interested in category theory and theoretical computer science. My MSc thesis (on intuitionistic modal logic) is available as a technical report in ps or ps.gz or pdf format. It's been slighly updated since the thesis was originally submitted and the PostScript (ps) version is the best quality the pdf looks a bit rough on screen, but does print properly.
