Her first book The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and the sequel Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) were later reworked into Bed-Knob and Broomstick (1957), the basis for the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks , starring Angela Lansbury. In 1952 the first of the books in the Borrowers series, The Borrowers was published to great critical acclaim. It won the Carnegie Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Book, and was named an ALA Distinguished Book. This was followed by The Borrowers Afield The Borrowers Afloat The Borrowers Aloft Poor Stainless: A New Story About the Borrowers (1971), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982), which includes Poor Stainless . Richard Jefferies (1848–1887), English naturalist, novelist, and essayist whose prophetic vision was unappreciated in his own Victorian age but has been increasingly recognized and admired since his death. By combining detailed observation with a mystic apprehension of nature, he was a master both of a straightforward descriptive style… "If we had never before looked upon the earth, but suddenly came to it man or woman grown, set down in the midst of a summer mead, would it not seem to us a radiant vision? The hues, the shapes, the song and life of birds, above all the sunlight, the breath of heaven, resting on it; the mind would be filled with its glory unable to grasp it, hardly believing that such things could be mere matter ... too beautiful to be long watched lest it should fade away." — from 'Wild Flowers', The Open Air THE LIFE AND WORKS OF Richard Jefferies http://www.bath.ac.uk/~lissmc/rjeffs.htm

Mystical Experiences of Richard Jefferies
English naturalist, novelist, and essayist whose prophetic vision came from detailed observation of nature and his own life. Unappreciated in his own Victorian age, his writings are now embraced by those who are closely affiliated with the nature movement. The son of a yeoman farmer, Jefferies in 1866 became a reporter on the North Wilts Herald, and went on to produce many essays, a book for boys, and his most famous work, The Story of My Heart
"The story of my heart commences seventeen years ago. I was not more than eighteen when an inner and esoteric meaning began to come to me from all the visible universe, and undefinable aspirations filled me.

Cade, John c 1420 - Rebel The Worthies of Sussex by M.A. Lower (1865) Carlyle, Florence Emily 24th September 1864 - 2nd May 1923 Painter Florence Carlyle was one of the prominent women artists in Canada throughout the late 19th c and early 20th c, during a period that saw the emergence of significant number of professionally trained women artists. Travelling from Woodstock, Ontario, where she grew up, to France, Great Britain, the United States and Italy, with periodic visits home for long periods of time, she settled in Great Britain in 1913 and died in Crowborough, East Sussex, not far from London. Although she was a versatile artist, she particularly enjoyed turning her brush to depicting the fugitive moods of women; her warm and sensitive genre subjects, based on observation and her interpretation of Victorian society, sensibility, costume and the stuffs and textures of Victorian taste, are among the best of her works. What unites them, early and late, is an ability to seize the momentary but telling gesture, and great technical brilliance in the portrayal of light, particularly the ruddy glow of firelight.
Florence Carlyle's next exhibition is scheduled for the 2nd June - 26th August 2006 at the Woodstock Art Gallery in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. More details can be ascertained by emailing the
