London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Welcome to the personal page of my website! This is just a collection of satire, pictures, and eclectic ramblings, thrown together when I'm up at 3am in the morning and the rest of the world is fast asleep. I am always amazed by the randomness of the meanderings my mind takes at this time of morning. ( Normal hours are for normal people! - don't you agree? ) I'll try to update my page as often as possible, but keep in mind, I have a real life, and can't spend all my time on the net 24/7, updating my sites, monitoring new e-mails (I get several hundred every day) and responding to them all in anything like a timely manner - but if you want to drop me a line to

The Ridgeway
The town of Swindon is just a few miles - and within sight of - the Ridgeway, which is possibly the oldest road in Europe. Stone Age man once walked along its route - not only long before the likes of Stonehenge came into being, but even before Britain was an island. Today it stretches from Overton Hill, near Avebury, in the west, and runs for about 40 miles, crossing the Thames at Streatley. What we now call the Ridgeway Path then continues for another 45-mile section until it reaches Ivinghoe, north east of Aylesbury, following the course of another ancient path (though not quite so ancient as the original Ridgeway) which is called the Icknield Way. This section is much different in character to the part which runs close to Swindon, passing through beech woodlands, and, strictly speaking, is a continuation of the older Ridgeway. It is all part of a continuous route that once stretched from the south western shores of the English Channel to the North Sea at Hunstanton on The Wash. The Ridgeway is therefore the oldest surviving relic from our human past and Swindon is fortunate to have this remarkable ancient route on its doorstep. It is even more fortunate that the section that transverses the Marlborough Downs and passes up to the Vale of the White Horse is one of the most spectacular of all.
