Here is a hyperlink to the Microsoft Encarta home page.   http://www.encarta.msn.com James, William (1842-1910), American philosopher and psychologist, who developed the philosophy of pragmatism. Psychology James's first book, the monumental Principles of Psychology (1890), established him as one of the most influential thinkers of his time. The work advanced the principle of functionalism in psychology, thus removing psychology from its traditional place as a branch of philosophy and establishing it among the laboratory sciences based on experimental method. In the next decade James applied his empirical methods of investigation to philosophical and religious issues. He explored the questions of the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, free will, and ethical values by referring to human religious and moral experience as a direct source. His views on these subjects were presented in the lectures and essays published in such books as The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy (1897), Human Immortality (1898), and The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902). The last-named work is a sympathetic psychological account of religious and mystical experiences.

William James
American Philosopher
William James was born in New York city in 1842 to a priviledged family. His early schooling took place in New York City. Early on, however, he attended schools in England, France, Germany and Switzerland. He was also taught by private tutors. By 1860 he was fluent in 5 languages and could count among his acquaintances family friends like Thoreau, Emerson, Greeley and Mill. In 1861 James entered Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard University. Soon after he transfered to Harvard's Medical School to hedge against his family's dwindling fortune. He found medicine boring and after a trip to the Amazon in 1865-6 he left America for the therapeutic baths of France and Germany for nearly two years, where he studied under Helmholtz and other leading physiologists, and became thoroughly conversant with the New Psychology. There were no professors of psychology in American universities before James began teaching the subject in 1875. The only forms of psychology then taught in the United States were phrenology and Scottish mental philosophy, an offshoot of associationism used chiefly as a defense of revealed religion. James himself had never taken a course in the New Psychology because none was available; as he once jested, 'The first lecture in psychology that I ever heard was the first I ever gave.' In 1878 he began one of his more important works, Principles of Psychology. He also married, in 1878, Alice H. Gibbens of Cambridge, Mass.

American psychologist and philosopher. A founder of pragmatism and functionalism, he developed an approach to intellectual issues that greatly influenced American thought. His works include The Principles of Psychology (1890) and The Varieties of Religious Experience Encyclopedia James, William, 1842–1910, American philosopher, b. New York City, M.D. Harvard, 1869; son of the Swedenborgian theologian Henry James and brother of the novelist Henry James . In 1872 he joined the Harvard faculty as lecturer on anatomy and physiology, continuing to teach until 1907, after 1880 in the department of psychology and philosophy. In 1890 he published his brilliant and epoch-making Principles of Psychology, in which the seeds of his philosophy are already discernible. James's fascinating style and his broad culture and cosmopolitan outlook made him the most influential American thinker of his day. His philosophy has three principal aspects—voluntarism, pragmatism, and “radical empiricism.” He construes consciousness as essentially active, selective, interested, teleological. We “carve out” our world from “the jointless continuity of space.” Will and interest are thus primary; knowledge is instrumental. The true is “only the expedient in our way of thinking.” Ideas do not reproduce objects, but prepare for, or lead the way to, them. The function of an idea is to indicate “what conceivable effects of a practical kind the object may involve—what sensations we are to expect from it and what reactions we must prepare.” This theory of knowledge James called
