The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Henry James (1843-1916)
Index Henry James once wrote that art, especially literary art, "makes life, makes interest, makes importance." James's fiction and criticism is the most highly conscious, sophisticated, and difficult of its era. With Twain , James is generally ranked as the greatest American novelist of the second half of the 19th century. James is noted for his "international theme" that is, the complex relationships between na‹ve Americans and cosmopolitan Europeans. What his biographer Leon Edel calls James's first, or "international," phase encompassed such works as Transatlantic Sketches (travel pieces, 1875), The American Daisy Miller (1879), and a masterpiece, The Portrait of a Lady (1881). In The American , for example, Christopher Newman, a na‹ve but intelligent and idealistic self-made millionaire industrialist, goes to Europe seeking a bride. When her family rejects him because he lacks an aristocratic background, he has a chance to revenge himself; in deciding not to, he demonstrates his moral superiority. James's second period was experimental. He exploited new subject matters feminism and social reform in

Henry James (1843-1916)
Biographical note
American/British author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best-known for novels and novellas of morals. As such, he favors internal, psychological drama; his work is frequently about alienation, his prose frequently serpentine. His earlier work is considered Realist, but in fact throughout his long career he maintained a strong interest in a variety of artistic effects and movements. More:

Many consider Henry James to be the master of the psychological novel, and his influence on 20th century English literature is undisputed. An expatriate in London from 1876 to his death (he became a British citizen in 1915), James wrote about European-American and male-female relations, concocting some of the most sophisticated, complex prose you'll ever hope to read. Hollywood dropped the complex prose, kept the costumes and made several films based on James' novels, from 1947's The Lost Moment to 1997's Wings of the Dove FOUR GOOD LINKS Dictionary James Henry

Biography of Henry James (1843-1916)
Henry James Henry James (1843-1916) was born on April 15, 1843, to Henry James, Sr., and his wife Mary Walsh Robertson. His older brother William was born in 1842, and younger siblings Garth Wilkinson, Robertson, and Alice were born in 1845, 1846, and 1848, respectively. Henry Sr., the son of an Irish immigrant, was one of thirteen children, born in Albany, New York. By the time his own children were born, he had inherited a great deal in wealth from his father, and the James family, at the time of Henry Jr.'s birth, lived in New York City, where Henry Sr. devoted his time to the study of theology, philosophy, and mysticism, rejecting his father's Presbyterian Churchto follow the teachings of Swedish Christian mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. The James children were educated in a variety of often unorthodox circumstances ? sometimes at schools, sometimes with private tutors, always with access to books and new experiences. Margaret Fuller, Washington Irving, William Makepeace Thackeray, and George Ripley visited to the James home during Henry Jr.'s boyhood. In 1855, the James family embarked on a three year-long trip to Geneva, London, and Paris ? an experience that influenced Henry Jr.'s decision, as an adult, to live and write in Europe rather than his native America.

She felt in italics and thought in capitals. "To take what there "is", and use it, without waiting forever in vain for the preconceived to dig deep into the actual and get something out of that this doubtless is the right way to live." I hate American simplicity. I glory in the piling up of complications of every sort. If I could pronounce the name James in any different or more elaborate way I should be in favour of doing it. I don't want everyone to like me; I should think less of myself if some people did.
