Art: Fine Arts
Entries in this section either contain illustrations of Mt. Shasta or contain information pertaining to the experiences of various artists at Mt. Shasta. The earliest known artworks of Mt. Shasta date from 1841, when both Alfred Agate and James Dwight Dana sketched the mountain as part of their duties as members of the Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition. Since then literally hundreds of artists, including some of the best known American artists of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, have come to Mt. Shasta for inspiration. For an account of Mount Shasta's extensive art history see Miesse: The Significance of Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource in 19th and early 20th Century California Art. used by the College of the Siskiyous Library. [MS167].          Austin, Mary 1868-1934.  California: The Land of the Sun .  New York: The Macmillan Company, 1914. Embossed color representation of Mt. Shasta on cover.     Mary Austin summarizes her impressions of Mount Shasta and says:  "Shasta will have done its best for you if it enables you to quake in the very marrow of consciousness" (p. 143).
The author was one of California's best known 19th century novelists. She penned this collection of non-fiction travel essays as a tribute to her favorite state. Combined with the color reproductions of watercolors by the English artist Sutton Palmer, the book, with its strikingly beautiful cover, is in many respects a work of art in itself. Note that the book is a travel guide however, and at times the writing suffers from being overly pro-California.
Sutton Palmer's paintings, commissioned for this book, include views of Mount Shasta, Castle Crags, and the McCloud River.     22. Literature: Novels, Plays, Essays.  [MS167].

Synopsis
...while nothing in the canyon itself has changed, and while my book, "In and Around the Grand Canyon," is still as helpful to the traveler and general reader as ever, there has been a growing demand for a new book which should give the information needed by the traveler who comes under the new conditions, telling him how he may best avail himself of them. This book is written to meet this demand. It therefore partakes more of the character of a guide book than the former volume, so it has been decided to make it lighter in weight and handier in form, so that it can be slipped into the pocket or handbag, and thus used on the spot by those who wish a ready reference handbook.

From The Wonders of the Colorado Desert
George Wharton James (1858-1923)
Living in the desert has its charms for many Californians, but few have appreciated the majesty of its beauty as much as an expatriate Englishman and one-time Methodist minister.
George Wharton James came to Nevada as a Methodist minister. He eventually left the church after a scandal, becoming first a public lecturer then an author. His spiritual training is evident in his loving descriptions of his special interest, the Colorado Desert, even when describing such irritating phenomena as desert sandstorms. During the sandstorms the mountains that shut in the northwestern end of the desert undergo marvelous transformations. The atmosphere becomes charged with fine sand and dust particles upon which the sun reflects and plays as the clouds that intervene between it and the dust allow. Late in the afternoon this dust becomes luminous with half-transparent color-light that glows and shines and makes the whole mountainside appear as a veritable mountain of transfiguration; as if the "glory of the Lord" shone upon it. One feels in looking at it that he is on holy ground and must not only take his shoes from his feet but uncover his head in awesome reverence.

Karl Marx (1818-1883) But owing to our wage system, this increase of wealth due to the combined efforts of men of science, of managers, and workmen as well has resulted only in an unprecedented accumulation of wealth in the hands of the owners of capital; while an increase of misery for the great numbers, and an insecurity of life for all, have been the lot of the workmen; the unskilled labourers, in continuous search for labour, are falling into an unheard-of destitution. And even the best paid artisans and skilled workmen labour under the permanent menace of being thrown, in their turn, into the same conditions as the unskilled paupers, in consequence of some of the continuous and unavoidable fluctuations of industry and caprices of capital.
