    The Whipple Family
General William Whipple , of Portsmouth, N.H., signer of the Declaration of Independence, was born January 14th, 1730, in Kittery, Me. He was the son of Captain William Whipple , senior, of Kittery, grandson of Major Matthew Whipple of Ipswich, Mass., great grandson of Captain John Whipple , and great-great grandson of Elder John Whipple , both also of Ipswich.
    In England
"The Whipple family in this country undoubtedly descended from Matthew Whipple of Bocking , county Essex, England, a clothier. Will of December 19th, 1616, probated January 28th, 1618, mentions son Matthew, son John, daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne [Amce?], Johane, Amye; 'my sister, wife of Richard Rathbone; Hercules Stephens, grandchildren Hercules and Margaret Arthur, and Henry and Anne Coldham [Caldham]'. "The two brothers, Matthew and John, who were settled at Ipswich some time before 1638, were probably the sons mentioned above. They settled at the 'Hamlet,' now the town of Hamilton. John was deacon or ruling elder of the First Church. He was freeman 1640, and representative for eight years between that and 1653. By first wife he had childrenMary, John, Susanna, Sarah, and probably others."

    History
    A Short History
At first glance, Marlow has the allure of a modern town, although further investigation brings to light the fine period (mainly Georgian) buildings of the High Street and West Street. In the 11th century, Marlow was ringed by monastic foundations, and the remains of a 12th century chapel and crypt still exist at Widmer Farm. In St. Peter Street you will find The Old Parsonage and Deanery, which form part of the finest 14th century house in Buckinghamshire. Marlow Place, which dates from 1721, formed part of the Royal Military College before it moved to Sandhurst in 1812. The town's fine suspension bridge was built from 1829-1832 and just along the river is the superb 18th century Court Garden House, now part of a leisure complex. The real growth in Marlow, however, has been since World War II when commuters mainly from the South discovered the delights of this rural town and many businesses now have offices here. The population has trebled since then. Those of you interested in family histories might like to consult the Buckinghamshire Genealogical Society's website
    In Detail
In 1085 King William I sent out his men, rating officers, and let them find out about the country; they came to Marlow. The Domesday Book entry is translated as follows:

Bipartisan Proposal could generate $640 million GPR, $1.5 billion all funds in 2005-07
This week was marked by a flurry of activity surrounding a proposal to increase Wisconsin’s cigarette tax by $1. In a Wednesday, April 16 interview with WIBA radio, Governor Doyle indicated he might consider a $1 per pack increase if it were "locked away" and used for anti-smoking and health care programs. According to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, a $1 per pack increase in effect on July 1, 2005, would generate $640 million GPR over the 2005-07 biennium. If used for the state’s Medicaid program, that revenue would capture approximately $960 million in federal matching revenue – a total of over $1.5 billion in 2005-07.

ORIGIN OF A WELL-KNOWN PASSAGE IN HUDIBRAS.
"For he that fights and runs away May live to fight another day," generally supposed to form a part of Hudibras , are to be found (as Mr. Cunningham points out, at p. 602. of his Handbook for London ), in the , 12mo. 1656; a clever collection of "witty trifles," by Sir John Mennis and Dr. James Smith. The passage, as it really stands in Hudibras "For those that fly may fight again, Which he can never do that's slain." But there is a much earlier authority for these lines than the "Apophthegmes, that is to saie, prompte, quicke, wittie, and sentencious saiynges, of certain Emperours, Kynges, Capitaines, Philosophiers, and Oratours, as well Grekes as Romaines, bothe veraye pleasaunt and profitable to reade, partely for all maner of persones, and especially Gentlemen. First gathered and compiled in Latine by the right famous clerke, Maister Erasmus, of Roteradame. And now translated into Englyshe by Nicolas Udall. Excusam typis Ricardi Grafton "Notwithstanding the fame of Erasmus, and the reputation of his translator, this volume has not obtained that notice which, either from its date or value, might be justly expected. Were its claim only founded on the colloquial notes of Udall, it is entitled to consideration, as therein may be traced several of the familiar phrases and common-place idioms, which have occasioned many conjectural speculations among the annotators upon our early drama."
