HOMŒOPATHY IN VERMONT.
By Thomas Lindsley Bradford, M. D. Sowing the Seed of Homœopathy in the Old Green Mountain State - Baird, the Independent, Self-educated, and Successful Practitioner, the Pioneer - Brief Allusion to State, District and County Societies - How and by Whom Homœopathy was Introduced in the Counties of Vermont. Homœopathy in Vermont was planted in much the same manner as statehood itself in that jurisdiction, and was an independent action on the part of its pioneer, David H. Baird, who is remembered as a man of good sound common sense, with an excellent understanding of medicines and their use in general, but who was not a graduate of any school of medicine. Whether Dr. Baird employed other methods in the healing art before beginning practice according to the law of similars does not appear, but it is known that he administered the little homœopathic doses in Coventry and Troy in Orleans county as early as about the year 1840, and thus became the pioneer of the profession in the historic Green Mountain state. But Dr. Baird was not long the sole exemplar of homœopathy in Vermont, and within the next twenty years following his advent into the ranks of the profession there were about thirty-five practitioners in that field ; and even before that period was passed, and as early as 1854, the homœopathic physicians of the state gathered together their numbers and organized the Green Mountain Homœopathic Medical Association, which has continued its existence to the present day and since 1858 has been known as the Vermont State Homœopathic Medical Society.

    SECRETARY OF STATE
    INDIAN WAR VETERAN MEDALS RECORDS
2.2 cu. ft. and 18 reels microfilm
DESCRIPTION: In 1905 the legislature passed an act entitled "Medals for Indian War Veterans" (ch. 86 in Laws of the State of Utah....1905. The Star Printing Co., Salt Lake City, 1905.). This authorized the governor and secretary of state to procure a medal for each of the veterans who actually served in suppressing Indian hostilities in Utah during the years 1850 to 1872, inclusive. These forms are the applications for a medal submitted by the veteran or next of kin. Related correspondence also is included as are a few actual medals which were never distributed. Most of the applications relate to service in the Black Hawk wars. Other confrontations mentioned on the forms include the Walker War, Navajo raids, Shosone war, Paiute raids, Tintic skirmishes, etc. The form required county; veteran's age; birthplace; current residence; name of war in which served; enrollment date; rank; commander's name; and places, years, and type of actual service followed by the applicant's signature. If being completed by next of kin, there was a blank for the applicant to state his or her relationship to the veteran. The statement was witnessed by a notary and attested to by two individuals with personal knowledge of the applicant's service. The signature of the commander stating that the individual was entitled to a medal might also be included. The back of the form gives the date received, date approved, and the signatures of the governor and secretary of state.

An act was passed (1667-68) in the reign of Charles II for the express purpose of increasing the consumption of English wool. It was stated that "No corps should be buried in anything other than what is made of sheep's wool only; or put into any coffin lined or faced with any material but sheep's wool, on pain of forfeiture of £5." and an affidavit to that effect was required not later than 8 days after the burial.
Although the Act was not repealed until 1814, its use gradually died out during the 18th Century. In Calstock registers, no record of individual receipt was made from 1735 onwards.
