Notes on Variations on "America" (1891-92, 1902) Charles Ives (1874-1954) Charles Ives was not yet twenty, still serving his musical apprenticeship under the tutelage of his father Edward, when he completed the first version of what has proven one of his most enduring works, the Variations on "America." Its status as something of a signature piece for the composer is a bit anomalous; although it gives clear evidence of the path the mature Ives would follow, Variations is a distinctly youthful work that also suggests the road he quickly abandoned. From the perspective of Ives's later work, Variations on "America" stands out for its decorous, almost pedantic good behavior. This may seem a strange assertion, given its rather cavalier treatment of the main theme, a melody sacrosanct even in Ives's day. But compared to the boldly experimental approach to musical form characteristic of all of his mature work, this piece, with its clear invocation of the centuries-old structure of introduction, theme, and variations seems positively reactionary. It also bears observing that the irreverence we are likely to hear in Variations derives in some measure from William Schuman's masterful orchestration. Ives's original is for the organ (the instrument on which he earned his living before turning to seek his fortune as an insurance executive); Schuman's instrumentation sharpens, and occasionally exaggerates, the playfulness of the original.

Zijn kantoorbetrekking stelde hem naar eigen zeggen in staat als kunstenaar onafhankelijk te blijven. Hoewel er voor het componeren weinig tijd overbleef, was zijn productiviteit zeer groot. Na 1926 heeft hij echter geen nieuwe werken meer voltooid. Ives begon al vroeg met muzikale verkenningen buiten het conventionele idioom.
