American composer whose works anticipated those of later 20th-century musicians in their abandonment of conventional tonality. His Third Symphony (1904–1911) won a Pulitzer Prize. Encyclopedia Ives, Charles īvz ) , 1874–1954, American composer and organist, b. Danbury, Conn., grad. Yale, 1898; pupil of Dudley Buck and Horatio Parker. He was an organist (1893–1904) in churches in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. In the insurance business from 1898 to 1930, Ives was concurrently composing music that was extremely original, iconoclastic, and advanced in style, anticipating some of the innovations of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, but not influencing musical trends because most of his works were not published as they were written. They were little known until 1939, when performance of his second piano sonata, Concord (1911–15), won him wide recognition. In 1947 his Third Symphony was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Ives's compositions include four numbered symphonies, orchestral suites, sonatas, organ pieces, choral works, a great deal of chamber music, and about 150 songs. His works are frequently dissonant, harmonically dense, and lushly scored with complexly layered themes, textures, and rhythms. In addition, he often uses vernacular American music, e.g., folk music, hymns and spirituals, marches, dances, rags, blues, and parlor songs, in his compositions, evoking the spirit of such aspects of American life as revival meetings and brass-band parades.

, composer and businessman. Ives was an American original in the tradition of the eighteenth-century composer William Billings, who declared that every composer "should be his own carver." Ives's music was imbued with the spirit of his New England forebears, and the ideas of the nineteenth-century transcendentalists provided the inspiration for many of his compositions. His strong belief in self-reliance and devotion to family and community appear in the pamphlets he issued on American democracy and business enterprise. (Ives earned his living in the insurance business and composed in private without recognition or approval from the larger musical community.) Ives received his early musical training from his father, an unconventional bandmaster and choir director who encouraged original thought along with technical precision. His years at Yale (1894-1898) included composition study with Horatio Parker, who did not share the young composer's enthusiasm for unresolved dissonances. After graduation, Ives continued composing and embarked on his insurance career. He suffered a major heart attack in 1918 but was able to complete his Concord Sonata and a book

    Charles Ives (1874-1954)
Widely regarded as America's most seminal composer, Charles Ives is having twin anniversaries in 2004 and accordingly a worldwide profusion of performances in his honor. The year marks the 130th anniversary of his birth and the 50th of his death. The Charles Ives Society has issued a handsome and informative brochure containing a short biography and listing of the complete works and their sources. In a covering memo, Todd Vunderink of Peermusic Classical, one of Ives's principal publishers, writes: "Ives was a fascinating figure, full of contradictions. He was a visionary, he was a provocateur; he invoked timeless mysteries, yet he was cagey about his position as a musical modernist; his musical materials were of the people, but used in the most phantasmagoric ways; and though his music heartiy commented on the life and music around him, he did not often urge it on performers." Charles Edward Ives Charles Ives was born in the small manufacturing town of Danbury, Connecticut, on October 20, 1874, two years before Brahms finished his First Symphony. During the Civil War his father George Ives had been the Union's youngest bandmaster, his band called the best in the army. When the war ended George had returned to Danbury to take up the unusual trade, in that business-oriented town, of musician. As a cornet player, band director, theater orchestra leader, choir director, and teacher, George Ives became the most influential musician in the region. Yet while Danbury prided itself during the 1880s in being called "the most musical town in Connecticut" (that in large part due to George Ives's labors), people still viewed the profession with little understanding or respect. That situation, which would have been the same in most American towns in the 19th century, had its impact on Charles Ives. Still, his family was prominent, noted for extravagant personalities and (except for George) a gift for business. like father, like son
